HL’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

As February quickly approaches we are looking forward to some big events including Community Night on this Wednesday 1/31 and the TD Ski Trip on Saturday 2/3

There is still time to sign up for the IRIS Run for Refugees 5K!  Please go to this link to register and enter the coupon code TD2018.

Our “picture of the week” comes from TD aide and Froco, Rosa Vargas, and features our “Red Wine Tasting with David Swensen, Yale’s Chief Investment Officer!  Here he is with TD seniors Claire Kim, Zayd Adassi,  Sarah Ludwin-Perry, Sammi Stroman, Sydney Garick, Jacob Mitchell, and Rosa Vargas.  We are very grateful for his generosity in sharing both his personal wine collection and knowledge with our seniors.  And we are fortunate that David Swensen will be back in April for a white wine tasting!

I am happy to announce that we are going back to our past sign-up system for the Selin Lounge!  Anyone interested in having access for the remainder of the academic year, will need to come to the TD HoC office to fill out a request form and sign the new use policy.   Once you submit the form to the HoC office, the staff will activate your access to the lounge. If you would like to reserve the space in advance, please continue to use the online sign-up site.

“Out of the corner of one eye, I could see my mother. Out of the corner of the other eye, I could see her shadow on the wall, cast there by the lamplight. It was a big and solid shadow, and it looked so much like my mother that I became frightened. For I could not be sure whether for the rest of my life I would be able to tell when it was really my mother and when it was really her shadow standing between me and the rest of the world.”  (Jamaica Kincaid, Annie John)

CULTURAL CONNECTIONS COUNSELORSHIPS

Applications for Cultural Connections Counselors are now open. Cultural Connections is one of the pre-orientation programs at Yale. Cultural Connections brings in together students of all backgrounds and cultures and empowers participants with a community, knowledge of resources, and early conversations centered around the salient identities of students. This summer, the program will welcome students from the Class of 2022 from August 18-23. Rising sophomores and juniors are welcome to apply. While previous experience is valued, it is not an exclusionary factor. We are looking to recruit a pool of candidates that reflects as many experiences found at Yale as possible. Selected candidates must be able to arrive on campus on August 16th and participate in the entirety of the program and attend trainings in late Spring.  Applications are due on February 9th

YALE POLITICS INITIATIVE

The Yale Politics Initiative, a new non-partisan program through the Department of Political Science, is launching its “Off the Record” series on political practice. Five political operatives—Joel Benenson, Frank Luntz, Patti Solis Doyle, Jeff Roe, and Tony Podesta—will each come to campus to teach an application-only, non credit master class capped at a small number of students.

Joel Benenson, Hillary Clinton’s chief strategist and Barack Obama’s lead pollster, is coming to campus for our first master class, in which he’ll walk students through the specifics of the Obama ’08 and ’12 campaign strategies. It’s taking place on February 7 from 4-6:30pm, and the application is now live at bit.ly/joelotr.  Joel Benenson will also take part in a public conversation with Dean Alan Gerber. This event will take place on February 7 from 8-9pm.

INTERVENING IN BIAS INCIDENTS: STRATEGIES FOR ACTION IN THE MOMENT

Intervening in a bias incident makes a big difference, both for the individuals involved and for the whole community, and yet bystanders sometimes hesitate to act. Hosted by student and professional staff of the Yale College Dean’s Office, this workshop focuses on practical strategies for interrupting bias and harassment, and for supporting those targeted by it.  All members of the Yale community are welcome.  Registering for the workshop requires a Yale OrgSync account, which any Yale affiliate can create.
