TIMOTHY DWIGHT NOTES & NEWS

WEEK OF 8/28/2023

HL’S PIECES

Dear Red Lions,

Welcome to new 2023-24 academic year and our first edition of Notes and News, our weekly TD newsletter!

Quick introduction for all who are new to TD – Notes and News comes out every Monday – with the exception of holidays – and it is chock full of important announcements about our college as well as other events and deadlines around campus.  In my part, I will share TD event listings, application deadlines, and other important information specific to our college.  In Dean’s portion, she will offer important academic deadlines and opportunities around campus.

AND we feature a “photo of the week” submitted by a member of our TD community – students, staff, administrators, and fellows –capturing life inside and outside of our courtyard.  If you would like to send in a photo, please write up a caption describing who is in the photo and what is taking place.  Then just shoot it my way at mary.lui@yale.edu.

To get us started, here is this week’s “photo of the week” titled “TD 27 Goes to Sunnyside”.  We are once again grateful to TD Fellows Guido and Anne Calabresi for inviting our first-year lions to their beautiful farm in Bethany, CT.  We could not have had a more gorgeous day to fly kites, toss frisbees, and enjoy delicious arepas from Rubamba.

I want to share a special History of Art conference on September 7th and 8th in honor of Robert Farris Thompson, who was my predecessor and ran TD for thirty-two years beginning in the 1980s.  Known affectionately as “Master T” or “T”, his portrait hangs in the TD Dining Hall.  In honor and celebration of his career, his former colleagues and students have created an incredible conference titled “African Art in Motion: A Symposium on the Legacy of Robert Farris Thompson. All TD students are welcome to attend.  To register, please go to the conference page.

Our TD Student Council known as The Mott Woolley Council or just Mott, is looking for new members. Mott manages TD gear sales, selects TD’s college seminar for each semester, and this year’s ski trip along with other outings for the college from paintball to apple picking. If you’re a first-year student and are interested in joining, please email the President of Mott and TD junior, Emily Zhang, at emily.x.zhang@yale.edu. Please include a short answer (up to 300 words) to the following question in your email: Why do you want to be in Mott?

Here are some more important TD events and dates for the next two weeks:

At 5:15pm, please meet our photographer at the Upper Courtyard steps for the First-Year Class Photo.  We’ll head into the dining hall at 5:30pm for the start of our beautiful First-Year Dinner served up by our amazing TD Dining Hall staff.  You will also pick up your new TD pins.  TD Upper-Years will dine in Commons in the Schwarzman Center.

Monday 9/4 Labor Day Road Race (New Haven Green and the city at large)

New Haven’s signature event and the home of the USATF 20k National championship, this exciting road race’s final stretch goes right past the TD gates!  I believe we still have a handful of free spots for both races, please go to the race registration link and type in the following code “TD5k” for the 5k race and “TDHalf” for the half marathon/20k spots.  Please do not share the code with non-TDers.  First-come, first-served.

Monday 9/4 10:23pm First TD Student Activities Committee aka SAC (TD Common Room)

Our TD SAC is a group dedicated to promoting a healthy, happy, and homey TD community. Weekly meetings take place every Monday at 10:23pm to plan social events such as TD formal, TD Day, study breaks before finals week, movie nights, and more! Anyone is welcome to show up to any meeting!  First meeting is on Monday 9/4 but feel free to come to any Monday night meeting!  Any questions, please email Co-President, Kennedy Wolf at kennedy.wolf@yale.edu.

Monday 9/4 11:59pm Buttery Applications Due

The TD Buttery is recruiting new staff and volunteers!  Here is a word from our TD Buttery Co-Manager, Anna Tredway:  “Hello to both new and returning lions! The campus-renowned BEST late night dining spot (aka The TD Buttery) is preparing for another year of serving up the best, most scrumptious grub for y’all. BUT, to do that WE NEED YOU! The TD Buttery is looking for students to help us run our ship and maintain our acclaim for being the The Best Buttery on Campus ©.” Here’s the link to the application.  Any questions should go to  anna.tredway@yale.edu  The Buttery plans to reopen on Sunday 9/10.

Thursday 9/7 8pm TD Hosts Twoset Violin (SSS Auditorium)

We are looking forward to having the comedy violin duo of Brett Yang and Eddy Chen back with us!  They are on their 2nd world tour and excited to come back to Yale.  The duo was last here in fall 2018 and performed in the TD house.  The video has since garnered over 350k views!  We plan to release tickets to the TD community in the next few days so please stay tuned.

Tuesday 9/12 8:30-10:30pm TD Community Night (TD Dining Hall)

We are once again hosting our Fall TD Community Night with performances by our very own Red Lions.  We especially want to encourage our first-years lions to perform and join in this very fun activity!  To sign-up and perform please go to this form.We ask that anyone interested in performing sign up by Wednesday September 6th at 11:59pm to give the TD staff and aides to organize and prepare for your acts.

Lastly, it’s been lovely seeing so many of you back and in the courtyard ready to start a new semester.  I wish to encourage all Red Lions to come to my TD HoC Office Hours, to talk about anything on your mind or discuss any ideas you might have for the college.  My office hours will be on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:30-3pm.  I will offer both in-person or Zoom options.  To make an appointment, please email Kim Rogers at Kimberly.rogers@yale.edu with your availability or stop into the office.  She’ll make sure to find a time for us to meet.

Wishing you all a happy first day of classes this Wednesday!  Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Àshe,
HL

Mysteries, Yes
Mary Oliver

Truly, we live with mysteries too marvelous
to be understood.

How grass can be nourishing in the
mouths of the lambs.
How rivers and stones are forever
in allegiance with gravity
while we ourselves dream of rising.
How two hands touch and the bonds will
never be broken.
How people come, from delight or the
scars of damage,
to the comfort of a poem.

Let me keep my distance, always, from those
who think they have the answers.

Let me keep company always with those who say
“Look!” and laugh in astonishment,
and bow their heads.
