TIMOTHY DWIGHT NOTES & NEWS

WEEK OF 2/19/2024

HL’S PIECES

Dear Red Lions,

Hope you are all staying warm and dry.  2024 is so far the snowiest it’s been in years.  So what better “photo of the week” then this one from First-Year Lion Coby Barrow, titled “Snowmen Looking to TD Tower”!

TD is celebrating the Year of the Dragon this week with two events.  First, the TD Dining Hall will be hosting a Lunar New Year menu for dinner!  Second, on Thursday 2/22 we are welcoming back chef/entrepreneur/cookbook author Irene Li at 4:30pm in the TD House to enjoy her dumplings and discuss her newest cookbook, Perfectly Good Food: A Totally Achievable Zero Waste Approach to Home Cooking.  May this Year of the Dragon bring good fortune, exciting changes, and enduring resilience for all of us!

I hope many of you had a chance to see President Salovey’s address regarding Yale’s history with slavery.  We still have room for more TDers to join in the TD Yale and Slavery Lunch Discussion sessions! They are on Tuesday 2/27 from 12 to 1pm, or Tuesday 3/5 from 1 to 2pm.  Please sign up here.

As promised here are the photos from our official event photographer of the Chubb events with Jill Ellis.  Here is Belle Golden, TD ’26 and Winger for the Yale Women’s Soccer team, presenting the team’s gifts to Jill Ellis at the end of our public interview at SOM.

And here is a great photo of Jill Ellis talking with TDers at the post-talk dinner in the dining hall.
Lastly, I want to call TDers’ attention to two incredible summer fellowships honoring former TD students – the Michael Manzella Memorial Fund and the Chase Coggins Memorial Fund.  These funds aim to celebrate and nurture the special qualities and interests that made these men so impactful in their all too brief lives.  To learn more about these opportunities please go to their respective websites.

Here are some important dates and events for this week and next:

Monday 2/19 9-10pm Valentine’s Day Special (TD Buttery)

Last week’s snowstorm, unfortunately, threw a small wrench into the Buttery’s Valentine’s Day plans.  The Buttery staff are excited to serve up hand-dipped chocolate covered strawberries at the bargain basement price of $1each!!!  So expect the same amount love at the same great price!

Tuesday 2/20 Lunar New Year Dinner (TD Dining Hall)

Our Dining Hall staff is excited to present their Lunar New Year menu of vid spice whole roasted chicken, cod with ginger and sesame oil, dumplings and more!

Thursday 2/22 4:30pm Tea with Chef and Cookbook author Irene Li (TD House)

To keep the Lunar New Year celebration going, we are excited to welcome back James Beard nominee, Irene Li!  Her new cookbook, Perfectly Good Food: A Totally Achievable Zero Waste Approach to Home Cooking has already been listed by Food and Wine as a “best summer cookbook of 2023”.  She will bring with her an assortment of her tasty dumplings as well as copies of her cookbook to give away.  We still have room for a small group of students to have dinner with Irene after the Tea.

Wednesday 2/29 Dinner Service TD Black History Month Dinner (TD Dining Hall)

Our amazing TD Dining Hall staff is once again sharing their beloved family recipes with us in this special annual dinner.

Saturday 3/2 2-5pm TD Trip to Urban Air Adventure & Trampoline Park

Mott is hosting a trip to the Urban Air Trampoline Park in Orange, CT. The indoor park hosts all kinds of activities, including trampolines, a climbing hill, trapeze, and battle beam. A bus will leave for the park at 2:00 pm, and return to the TD Gate by 5:00pm. The trip is fully subsidized by TDIf demand for the trip exceeds capacity, then there will be a random lottery next week for those who have signed up.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Àshe,
HL

“It’s so funny. I often think that things remain interesting to me as things to write about or wonder about when I don’t understand them. Puzzlement is a requirement for me… It makes me think that we might be in love with our capacity for flabbergastment. Or our capacity for being moved. Which is also to say, I think… that we’re in love with our capacity to not know. Because… you know, knowledge makes one stable. But to be unknown, unknowing, even to oneself means you’re capable of being changed.”

(Ross Gay, who will be giving a talk and reading in Battell Chapel Wednesday at 4:30pm – join me there!)

WOODBRIDGE FELLOWSHIPS

Established in 2005 by President Richard C. Levin, the Woodbridge Fellowship introduces recent Yale College graduates to the work and administration of Yale. The fellowship provides valuable professional experience for potential careers in higher education and non-profit organizations, particularly for recent graduates belonging to minority communities currently underrepresented in university administration.

Fellowships are full-time paid positions in the offices of university leaders, who take active interest in fellows’ professional development. Fellows directly report to senior members of their offices and work with a variety of university staff, at all levels. Fellows meet regularly together, including for lunchtime conversation with the president, provost, secretary and other university leaders. These conversations about roles and responsibilities, and the career paths that led people into academic administration, give fellows a broad understanding of many facets of working in higher education.

For more information on available positions and to submit applications, please visit our website. To hear from current fellows, we invite you to attend the upcoming information session on Wednesday, February 28, from 3:00-4:00pm in WTS B74. Students can register here
