WEEK OF 1/23/2024

HL’S PIECES

Dear Red Lions,

Hope you are all keeping warm this week!  Please know it is suppose to warm up in a few days so hang in there!

I received these two fun “photos of the week” from First-year lion, Eason Rytter featuring our 3 TD Spizzwinks students at their sold-out concert at Kennedy Center over winter break.  The first shows Sophomore Lion, Xari Carbins, soloing, and the other features Giri Viswanathan and Eason (last two on the right) with other members of the group.  Congratulations on an amazing performance!

Speaking of singing… our TD Spring Community Night is just around the corner on Tuesday 1/30!  As always we welcome all kinds of acts so if you want to get up and show your talent/passion… please sign up!  We promise to cheer you on!!!  Sadly, this is my last TD Community Night as your HoC so I will be sure to cheer extra loudly!

Quick reminder that this year’s special MLK Commemoration event will take place on Wednesday 1/24 and feature Civil Rights activist and writer, Ruby Bridges.  To find information, please go here.

The Shubert is showing their appreciation of TD’s support by inviting our staff and students to attend their “load-in” breakfast for Stephen Sondheim’s Company.  You will get to watch the sets being built, get a behind-the-scenes tour, and meet some of the key people involved in this incredible production.  Please email me by this Thursday 1/25 at mary.lui@yale.edu if you would like to attend.  Space is limited so please email only if you are planning to go.

Tuesday 1/30 5:30pm TD Senior Mellon Forum Resumes (TD House)

Last call to sign up for our spring Community Night!  Senior lions have priority but all are welcome to sign up!  Please sign up by 1/25 so our TD Stage Managers can plan the evening accordingly.

Sunday 2/4 2pm Matinee of Company (Shubert Theater)

For this spring semester, TD has 15 tickets to give away for the Sunday matinee performance of Company, winner of 5 Tony Awards!  This hilarious Stephen Sondheim musical centers on the story of Bobbie on her 35th birthday party as she explores her friendships and the ups and downs of romantic relationships.  To enter the lottery, please go to this Google Form.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Àshe,
HL

“Everything I had worked for, all my years of study, had been to purchase for myself this one privilege: to see and experience more truths than those given to me by my father, and to use those truths to construct my own mind. I had come to believe
that the ability to evaluate many ideas, many histories, many points of view, was at the heart of what it means to self-create. If I yielded now, I would lose more than an argument. I would lose custody of my own mind.” (Tara Westover, Educated)

OFFICE OF EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY
Get Paid to Pay It Forward: Apply Now to Become a Peer Mentor for the Office of Educational Opportunity (OEO)!

Have you ever participated in any programming with the Academic Strategies Program, the Disabilities Peer Mentor Program, STEM Navigators, or FGLI peer groups? If so, then you know first-hand how helpful the OEO peer mentors are! Now is your chance to join the team, by applying to become a peer mentor for the 2024-2025 academic year. OEO mentors support a lead workshops, offer 1-1 consultations, facilitate peer mentorship groups, and assist with a variety of special projects that help students thrive at Yale. All of our programming is dedicated to helping students identify and adapt mindsets and practical strategies that foster ownership and satisfaction with learning while connecting them with others in the Yale College Community.

New mentors start at $19.00 an hour for undergraduates and $23.50 for graduate & professional students. Applicants need to have attended Yale for at least 3 semesters by Fall 2024, with the exception of Eli Whitney students, Transfer students, and graduate students, all of whom need to have attended Yale for at least 2 semesters.

This year we are centralizing our application process; you will have an opportunity to identify which particular programs within the OEO family you’d like to work with: Academic Strategies (including Eli Whitney & Transfer students); FGLI Thrive, STEM Navigators, Disability Peer Mentors). Most OEO mentors provide support for two or more programs, working an average of 4-6 hours per week total. Students also receive extensive and ongoing paid training.
