TIMOTHY DWIGHT NOTES & NEWS

WEEK OF 1/16/2024

HL’S PIECES

Dear Red Lions,

Happy new year and welcome to the Spring 2024 semester!  Despite the cold and gloomy skies, I hope you all had a great first day of classes.  Please take your time settling back into life on campus.

I share this wonderful “photo of the week” from last semester sent by Ruiyan Wang TD ’21.  A former FroCo, she shared this great reunion photo of her Frosh when she visited last semester.  She sent the photo with warm wishes for the new year.  Hard to believe how quickly time has flown … some of these folks are now FroCos themselves!

We are very excited for the many programs we have planned for this semester, including our long-awaited Chubb Fellowship event with Coach Jill Ellis on Friday 2/9.  In addition, the Mott Woolley student council will be running their bo-annual ski trip on February 3rd to Mt Snow in Vermont.  Please sign-up here to enter the lottery!  And our first tea with food entrepreneur and pastry chef, Lauren Tran!

I am delighted to announce our TD Senior Sushi Night is happening next Tuesday 1/23 from 6-7:30pm at the TD House.  We are once again welcoming back the sushi chefs of Sono Bana to celebrate our Senior Lions.

Speaking of seniors… Mellon Forum will begin again on Tuesday 1/30.  In the meantime, we still have Mellon research funds so if you are still looking for financial support to purchase research materials or travel to archives and libraries, there is still an opportunity to apply.  Please remember all Mellon recipients must present at this spring semester’s TD Senior Mellon Forum.  Please go to the fellowships and grants database to apply.

Yesterday, the campus closed in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.  Please know that this year’s special MLK Commemoration event will take place on Wednesday 1/24 and feature Civil Rights activist and writer, Ruby Bridges.  To find information, please go here.

Here are some important dates and events for this week and next:

Sunday 1/21/2024 11:50pm Creative and Performing Arts Awards in the Residential Colleges Deadline

CPA applications are now live. For guidelines, please go to the CPA site.  Please remember all applicants need to consult with me before submitting a proposal.  You can make an appointment with Kim Rogers at Kimberly.rogers@yale.edu.

Tuesday 1/23/2024 6-7:30pm TD Senior Sushi Night (TD House)

Calling all TD seniors… we are excited to kick off your last semester on campus with this special TD tradition.  The sushi chefs at Sono Bana restaurant in Hamden will be available to serve up an assortment of their special rolls and lots of nigiri.  We will also have cooked food as well as vegetarian and vegan options available.

Tuesday 1/23/2024 11:59pm Deadline to enter lottery for Mott Woolley Ski Trip

Mott is thrilled to be running its bi-annual TD Ski Trip this year to Mt Snow in VT!  As in the past, this is a heavily subsidized trip with all rental equipment, lift tickets, and transportation provided.  We ask all participants to pay $25 to help defray the costs.  If this is a hardship for anyone, please email HL at mary.lui@yale.edu.  First-time snowboarders or skiiers are welcome as are folks who just want to go tubing.  The trip will leave early Saturday morning and return in the evening.  Pizza will be provided if we do not return in time to catch the TD Dining Hall.  For more information and to enter the lottery, please go here.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Àshe,
HL

 What Is Sacred
Lee Herrick

I have no idea what priests
dream of on Christmas Eve, what prayer

a crippled dog might whine before the shotgun.
I have no more sense of what is sacred

than a monk might have, sweeping the temple
floor, slow gestures of honor to the left,

the right. Maybe the leaf of grass tells us
what is worthwhile. Maybe it tells us nothing.

Perhaps a sacred moment is a photograph
you look at over and over again, the one

of you and her, hands lightly clasped like you
did before prayer became necessary, the one

with the sinking cathedral in Mexico City rising up
behind you and a limping man frozen in time

to the right of you, the moment when she touched
your bare arm for the first time, her fingers

like cool flashes of heaven.
