Notes and News – Week of 9/3

HL’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

I hope everyone had a great long weekend and is looking forward to jumping back into classes and finalizing schedules.

We had a very busy Labor Day yesterday.  Despite the hot and steamy conditions, we had more than 30 TDers – first years to resident families – run in this year’s New Haven Road Race!  Congratulations to everyone – especially our half-marathoners – for making it across the finish line!  Here is a great pre-race photo taken in our courtyard!

Afterwards, our TD first years, frocos, and aides boarded buses to Sunnyside Farm in Bethany, CT. We were very warmly welcomed by TD Fellow Anne Calabresi who gave us full run of her beautiful property.  We are hoping to go back later this fall when the foliage turns a bright yellow/red to take advantage of the hiking trails through the hills and around the town reservoir, so look out for that announcement.

And in celebration of our new first-years, here is our “photo of the week” from TD senior and Froco Kaitlin Cardon titled “TD Mini-Olympics” this past weekend.

As we begin to transition out of Shopping Period into courses, please make sure to observe the university’s Quiet Hours policy of 11pm-8am on weekdays and 1am on the weekends.  In addition, the TD Library is always used for quiet study so folks can always count on that space to work.  So if you want to have a conversation, just about any other space in the college will do.

Here are our important events for this week:

Wednesday 9/5 4:30pm Tea with Ann Miura-Ko, TD ‘98 (TD House)

Our eagerly anticipate tea with Ann Miura-Ko, “the most powerful woman in startups,” is here!  Come meet one of the first investors of Silicon Valley companies such as Lyft and backed companies such as Modcloth early in their development.  She is also a pioneer investor in artificial intelligence and space technology.  After graduation from Yale, she completed a PhD in math modeling and computer security at Stanford University.  She currently serves on the Yale Corporation’s Investment Committee that oversees the Yale Endowment.

Sunday 9/9 4-5:30pm First Rehearsal of TD Community Chamber Orchestra (TD House)

The orchestra will hold its first rehearsal in preparation for our Community Night Performance on Tuesday 9/11, at roughly 9:30pm just after the pizza intermission.  Anyone interested in playing for the event should come to the TD House to rehearse.  If you are new to the TD orchestra, please email our conductor at sarah.fox@yale.edu.  Please let here know the following info:  a) your instrument and years played; b) last ensemble or orchestral piece played; c) what pieces you’d like the TDCCO play this season.

Here are some great events for next week:

Tuesday 9/11 8:30pm TD Community Night (TD Dining Hall)

I am excited by the acts signed up so far – music, magic, and more!!! We still have room for a few more people to sign up.  TD First-years, I heard from many of you this weekend that you’re interested in performing.  Please do sign up and don’t be shy!  TD seniors the clock is ticking!  You all know this is the warmest and most enthusiastic audience you’ll ever see.  Our stage manager and emcees need time to sort out the performance schedule for the night so you need to sign up this weekend.  Please go to this link if you are interested in participating.  TD Community Sign Ups will close on Sunday 9/9.

Underground Spaces Update

This is a quick note to let folks know that we are working on reopening all of the TD underground spaces – Buttery, Recording Studio, Art Studio, Student Kitchen and the Selin Lounge – by the end of Shopping Period, next week.  Please remember that our TD Aides are also students and it’s important we give them time to get their courses and schedules sorted.  But please know that the music practice rooms are already available to TD students.  Just come to the HoC office to sign up for swipe access and we’ll activate your IDs within 48 hours

We will be announcing new classes for the TD recording studio and new drop-in hours for the TD Art Studio.  So please stay tuned for those announcements.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Áshe,

HL

“But home isn’t where you land; home is where you launch. You can’t pick your home any more than you can choose your family. In poker, you get five cards. Three of them you can swap out, but two are yours to keep: family and native land.”  (Tayari Jones, An American Marriage)
