TD Notes and News – Week of 10/31

Head of College’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

I hope everyone is doing ok after this morning’s sad news.  I do want to take a moment to wish everyone “Happy Halloween” despite the dark gloom across our campus and ask everyone to make good and safe choices this evening.  For Halloween, our wonderful Dining Hall planned a spooky Halloween themed cupcake decorating party in the Thompson Room from 5-7:30pm in the Thompson Room.  Please make sure to thank our wonderful Dining Hall staff for putting this together.

Speaking of Halloween, I hope all of you are enjoying the display of carved pumpkins in the courtyard.  Our facilities staff will be removing the carved pumpkins by Thursday morning so if anyone wants to take your pumpkins back to your rooms, please do so by the end of the day Wednesday.

This week’s “photo of the week” is titled “TD Printmakers” and comes from the TD New Haven Outreach team of Jackie Salzinger ’18, Vicki Gebert ’19, and Abdul-Razak Zachariah ’17 who led a great trip to Erector Square this Sunday.  According to Jackie, the group had “a great time getting lost in the building and even got to make our own print in one of the studios.”

Speaking of the city of New Haven, for the last 4 years TD students and administrators have been working to make the corner of Temple and Wall safer for pedestrian traffic.  Especially with 6 young children living in TD who have to cross the street to take the school bus, the issue of traffic safety has been very high on my list.  Last year, the city painted warnings on the sidewalks to tell pedestrians to cross with care.  But more work was supposed to be completed.  Because the work has been stalled, we are hoping to rally the TD community and get the city to move forward.  If you are interested in voicing your concerns, please go to the SeeClickFix link below and add in why you feel the corner needs to be safer for pedestrians.

Here are other events for this week:

Thursday 11/10 6pm Meet TD Security Guard Collin Moret (TD Common Room)

Many of you have already met and seen Collin Moret in and out of TD as he makes sure to keep the TD community safe.  Here is an opportunity to meet him and talk over any concerns or thoughts you may have towards security at TD.

Friday 11/11 7:30-9:30pm Friday Game Night (TD House)

Because of the TD formal at K2, we are pushing our monthly Friday game night back a week.  Same great board games, snacks, and fun!

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

******

(Rainer Maria Rilke)

A ghost, though invisible, still is like a place
your sight can knock on, echoing; but here
within this thick black pelt, your strongest gaze
will be absorbed and utterly disappear:

just as a raving madman, when nothing else
can ease him, charges into his dark night
howling, pounds on the padded wall, and feels
the rage being taken in and pacified.

She seems to hide all looks that have ever fallen
into her, so that, like an audience,
she can look them over, menacing and sullen,
and curl to sleep with them. But all at once

as if awakened, she turns her face to yours;
and with a shock, you see yourself, tiny,
inside the golden amber of her eyeballs
suspended, like a prehistoric fly.

Want to study a language NOT taught at Yale? Apply now to the Yale DILS Program (Directed Independent Language Study). Undergraduate, graduate and professional students are eligible to apply.  For more information and an application, visit us at:www.cls.yale.edu/dils or email dils@yale.edu.  Application deadline for the Spring 2017 semester: Friday, November 4, 2016.

The Yale Undergraduate Research Association (YURA), a registered student organization, has launched an integrated database of Yale faculty members with their research descriptions, the Research Database (RDB) (http://yura.yale.edu/database). With RDB, YURA aims to provide students of all disciplines with a convenient platform to better learn about work done by Yale faculty and find potential research mentors. We anticipate this to be an important resource for Yalies for years to come

Starting today and going through 11/7, the Library will be offering tours of SML for undergraduates.  These tours last one hour, and are designed to help students navigate this large and confusing/complicated library - with lots of tips and advice for using it effectively.  We’ll look at study spaces and unusual collections, too.  The tours are designed especially for freshmen and sophomores, but all students are welcome. We’ve scheduled tours in the morning, middle of the day and evening, to fit everyone’s schedules. Students can get more information and register at http://bit.ly/SMLstacks.

Participate in the “Diversity in STEM” Climate Survey (and win money!)  The survey is done by students enrolled in “Being Human in STEM,” a Yale course that examines how diversity of gender, race, religion, sexual orientation and economic circumstances shapes the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) experience at Yale and nationally.  Through the survey, they hope to improve the STEM experience at Yale by creating a more inclusive climate for students of color and other underrepresented groups. Here is the link to the survey.  We ask that all undergraduates take this survey regardless of major or year. Participants will be entered into a raffle to win one of eight Amazon Gift Cards of $25 each. Please submit by November 13th 11:59pm.
