Notes and News – Week of 10/30

HL’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

I hope many of you weathered last night’s terrible storm.  Even though the sun is out, the city is still recovering from all the downed limbs and branches so please be careful walking around!  That said, I’m delighted to see that our pumpkins made it through the storm!  This week’s “photo of the week” features three of our first year carvers – Claire Pastrana, Ariadne Letrou , and Christina Lindsay – as they worked together on their creations making use of knives, paint, and glitter glue!  Happy Halloween!

As we make our way past the half-way mark of the fall 2017 semester, I am thrilled to announce that TD is moving up in the Tyng Cup standings!!!  Just this week we went from fourth to third place after winning the IM ping pong championship and making it through the co-ed soccer quarterfinals.  We have our big semifinal match this afternoon so please come out to play or cheer us on.  Pickleball and volleyball are starting up as well so let’s finish the season strong!

As many of you know, next Tuesday 11/7 is Election Day!  Please know that if you live in the TD courtyard, you are in Ward 22 at vote at 55 Foote Street and if you are in RH you are in Ward 7 and vote at 200 Orange Street.  Anyone who’d like to register to vote in New Haven, may still do so, but the cut off is tomorrow 10/31 You can also try to register online.

Here are some great events for this week:

Join financial expert, Beth Kobliner, for a great conversation about how to start thinking and planning for your financial futures.   As Kobliner will tell you, it doesn’t matter how much you have now.  It’s all about gaining the right skills and understanding of how money works.  Kobliner is the best-selling author of Make Your Kida Money Genius (Even if You’re Not) and Get a Financial Life: Personal Finance in your Twenties and Thirties.  She has written for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Money magazine.  She has appeared on Good Morning America, PBS Newshour, CNN, and NPR.  She was appointed by President Obama to serve on his Advisory Council on Financial Capability and spearheaded the Council’s MoneyAsYouGrow.org website to help kids develop money skills.  Beth Kobliner has generously offered to give away copies of her book, Get a Financial Life, to students attending the tea so make sure to get here early to grab your copy!

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

The Best of It

Kay Ryan

However carved up

or pared down we get

we keep on making

the best of it as though

it doesn’t matter that

our acre’s down to

a square foot.  As

though our garden

could be one bean

and we’d rejoice if

it flourishes, as

though one bean

could nourish us.
