Notes and News – Week of 10/23

HL’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

Welcome back from Fall Break!  I hope many of you had a relaxing or productive week of catching up on work and sleep as well as taking some time to be with friends or family.  I was delighted to see TDers make use of the student kitchen and art studio as well as take the time to explore New Haven and hike up East Rock or visit Lighthouse Point.

Our “photo of the week” comes from Alec Hernandez TD ’18 who was in Greece over fall break with his class, “Narrating the Lives of Refugees,” jointly taught by American Studies professor and Timothy Dwight College Fellow, Professor Zareena Grewal, and New York Times writer, Jake Halpern.  Alec is pictured with Jemimah Orevaoghene ’19; not pictured but also on the trip was Huy Truong ’19.

I like to announce that Sammy Feliciano is our new General Manager of the Timothy Dwight College Dining Hall.  He will be replacing Greg Ward who is moving into another role in Dining Services.  We greatly appreciate Greg for his dedicated service to TD.  Sammy has worked at Hopper College as a production manager and has over 20 years’ experience in the corporate restaurant industry in both Front of the House and Back of the House operations.  Sammy is looking forward to working with our TD manager, Kory Evasick who is starting her 2nd year in TD.  Please stop by to introduce yourselves!

Speaking of the dining hall, this Friday 10/27 TD is hosting the Yale football team for dinner.  They will be arriving starting around 5;30pm.  Please note that the dining hall is open to TD students so you don’t have to go elsewhere!  The Dining Hall managers are planning to add some special stations to help with the traffic flow so please feel free to join the team for dinner!

Here are some great events for this week:

Monday 10/23 5-6:30pm “Graduate School 101” (TD House)

Any TDers interested in Graduate School should attend this information panel hosted by the Office of Career Services and with help from our TD Graduate Affiliates.  Even if you are undecided about graduate school you’ll find the session very helpful.  No RSVP needed.  Students are welcome to bring over dinner from the TD Dining Hall.  The DH will open at 4:45pm and make paper plates and flatware available for takeout.

Friday 10/27 2-5pm Fall Bulb Planting Party and Pumpkin Carving (TD Courtyard)

Enjoy the New England fall by planting a wide array of flower bulbs or carving a pumpkin!  Power tools will allow you to dig holes in the ground faster than you can tie your shoelaces!!!  You can do the traditional Halloween jack-o-lantern or go avant-garde or TD themed.  We’ll have hot cider, hot chocolate, and apple cider donut holes for all to enjoy.  Bulb planting will start at 2pm with the TD grounds staff.  Pumpkin Carving will begin at 3pm.

Here are our events for next week:

Tuesday 10/31 5-7:30pm TD Halloween Dinner (TD Dining Hall)

The dining hall serves up great food, fun treats, and spine-tingling thrills for this special dinner.   Feel free to come dressed up in your costumes!

Wednesday 11/1 8pm SAC Smores Night (TD Courtyard)

Gather around the fire pit to toast marshmallows and melt chocolate.  We’ll have hot chocolate and warm apple cider to top off this seasonal celebration in the courtyard.

Saturday 11/4 Family Weekend Reception (TD House)

The Lui/Balbarin family is looking forward to hosting your visiting family members for our reception.  Great food and drinks will help us all to reconnect!

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Áshe,

HL
