Notes and News – Week of 2/5/2018

HL’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

We are less than 2 weeks away from our Chubb Fellowship events with artist Faith Ringgold!  Her lecture titled, “Anyone Can Fly,” will be at the YUAG auditorium at 4:30pm.  Doors open at 3:30pm. If you have not had a chance to sign up for the post lecture dinner at 7:15pm in the TD Dining Hall, please go to this link.

We are also very excited that Faith Ringgold will be working with TD students to produce two original artworks for the TD dining hall.  To sign up for the art workshop with Faith Ringgold on Friday 2/16, please go to this link.

Speaking of art, this Sunday artist Karen Dow will be holding a silk screening workshop from 1-4pm in the TD Art studio.  You will get an opportunity to learn to use silk screens for art or t-shirt and poster designs.  Come to the workshop with images or designs you’d like to try out.  Please come to the TD office to sign up for a spot or send an email KC Mills at kc.mills@yale.edu.  Once again, space is limited to 12 participants.

We had a great week of TD events and several submissions for “photo of the week” making it very hard to pick just one!  So here are two great photos!  The first is titled “My Heart Will Go On” and features TD seniors in their hilarious recorder performance of Celine Dion’s hit song.  Amazing work by Rachel Hill to pull off the big surprise!!!  And congratulations to all the performers and special thanks to the Community Night crew – Camila Rivera Soto, Valentina Connell, and Andrew Evren – for their hard work organizing and putting on the big show!

Our second “photo of the week” is from TD junior Briggs Bulkely who did a terrific job organizing the 2018 ski trip to Mt. Snow!  We had nearly 50 TDers – first-timers to experts—join the trip.  Standing next to Briggs, from left to right, are fellow juniors Jimmy Wilkins, Ian Baker, and Joe Goode.  Special thanks goes to Max Yuhas for taking on the job of ski instructor!

The TD Outreach team is looking for 5 volunteers to help with the Yale-China Lunarfest in celebration of the Year of the Dog.  Many of the activities take place within close proximity to TD.  Please contact the outreach team at dale.maclean@yale.edu to volunteer.  If you’d like to get on the outreach team’s pan-list to learn about more communities in the New Haven neighborhoods, please sign up here.

Here are great TD events for this week:

Monday 2/5 8pm Chaplain Study Break with Cookies and Letter Writing (TD Student Kitchen)

Thurs 2/8 6-7:30pm   TD Sophomore Dinner (Sitar Restaurant, Corner of Grove & Orange)

We are taking this celebration of TD 2020 offsite for a delicious North Indian dinner!  As with TD tradition, we ask all the TD sophomores to write letters to their future senior selves!

Sunday 2/11 1-4pm Silk Screening Workshop (TD Art Studio)

If you have ever wanted to make your own posters and t-shirts, this is the workshop for you.  Sign up in the TD HoC office or email kc.mills@yale.eduto reserve your spot.  Make sure to bring some images with you for the project.

Sunday 2/11 8pm  TD Orchestra Concert (TD Dining Hall)

Please support the Timothy Dwight Community Chamber Orchestra for our first performance of the year!  We’ll be playing Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf”, Strauss’s “Blue Danube Waltz”, and Brahm’s “Lullaby”.  Free admission.

CULTURAL CONNECTIONS COUNSELORSHIPS

Applications for Cultural Connections Counselors are now open. Cultural Connections is one of the pre-orientation programs at Yale. Cultural Connections brings in together students of all backgrounds and cultures and empowers participants with a community, knowledge of resources, and early conversations centered around the salient identities of students. This summer, the program will welcome students from the Class of 2022 from August 18-23. Rising sophomores and juniors are welcome to apply. While previous experience is valued, it is not an exclusionary factor. We are looking to recruit a pool of candidates that reflects as many experiences found at Yale as possible. Selected candidates must be able to arrive on campus on August 16th and participate in the entirety of the program and attend trainings in late Spring.  Applications are due on February 9th

Y FASHION HOUSE

This year’s Y Fashion House Winter Show, “Ephemera,” will display how fashion has been employed as an art form throughout the years. Featuring New York, Connecticut and Yale student designers as well as student models, the show will take place Friday, February 9th at 10pm in Silliman dining hall. Please check the Y Fashion House Facebook page for ticket information to be posted shortly. We hope you will join us for an incredible evening of unique style and student performances!
