Notes and News - Week of December 7, 2020

December 15, 2020

Dear Red Lions,

I hope everyone’s finals period is off to a great start!  Our “photo of the week” comes from TD senior and art room aide, Antalique Tran, who shared her design talents to make this card to cheer all of you onto the finish line.

While we can’t do our usual in-person TD Study Breaks, I am delighted that our SAC is doing two virtual game nights this week.  Here are the Zoom links:

TD Upper Years know that we have a great tradition of designing a communal TD jigsaw puzzle for our finals period.  The puzzle usually sits out in the TD Common Room and it takes a group effort to complete the 1000+ piece puzzle.  But this year, we found a way to do this online.  So please click on this link to check it out.

You can do it alone or with friends.  To start, today’s puzzle is a 100-piece puzzle.  We’ll be varying the puzzles each day.

These should make for some quick and fun study breaks.  Enjoy!

I’ll continue to be available to meet with students over Zoom throughout the exam period.  To make an appointment, please write Deanna Caplan at deanna.caplan@yale.edu.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Àshe,
HL

Little Dog’s Rhapsody in the Night
Mary Oliver

He puts his cheek against mine
and makes small, expressive sounds.
And when I’m awake, or awake enough

he turns upside down, his four paws
in the air
and his eyes dark and fervent.

“Tell me you love me,” he says.

“Tell me again.”

Could there be a sweeter arrangement? Over and over
he gets to ask.
I get to tell.

END OF TERM POLICIES

Remember from my email last week that December 18 is also the final possible date for the submission of term papers and term projects.  Of course, individual instructors may set deadlines for earlier than this date, even as they have full discretion to set deadlines as late as this date.  Beyond December 18, coursework may be submitted only with a Temporary Incomplete from me; your instructor cannot set deadlines or issue extensions for beyond December 18, even in graduate or professional school courses.  Yale College considers such deadlines and extensions invalid, and the work will not be counted toward your grade.

Please note that, as with Dean’s Excuses, the Academic Regulations permit Temporary Incompletes in only a limited range of circumstances; contact me right away if you anticipate needing one so that we can discuss your situation.  Postponements of scheduled final examinations also require my intervention, and may be authorized under the same set of circumstances as Dean’s Excuses and Temporary Incompletes.  As always, if you find yourself in any kind of trouble relating to the submission of work or the taking of exams, let me know right away – I’m very happy to consult on these points.

YALE UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH JOURNAL

The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal provides an invaluable opportunity to receive high-quality feedback on your work from graduate students and professors in your field. We look forward to reading your exceptional scholarship.

We have three simple eligibility requirements.

  1. You have been a Yale undergraduate student within the last year.
  2. You conducted research as a Yale undergraduate, whether during the year or over the summer.
  3. If you performed this research as part of a group or class, your principal investigator, advisor, or professor approves of your work and its publication in YURJ.

If you meet all these requirements and would like your research to be featured in the journal, see the specific tabs for HumanitiesSocial Sciences, or STEM submissions for more information and the submission form. Submissions are currently open! The deadline to submit is December 23 for our spring 2021 issue.
