TD Notes and News – Week of 12/12

Head of College’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

A very short “Notes and News” this week as we are focused on providing lots of food for the body and brain as we all try to stay rested and energized for these remaining weeks of the semester.  If you missed my Friday email listing out all the study breaks, I have put it in today’s notes again.  Just keep reading!

But, first a big word of congratulations to our college musicians who performed in the inaugural TD orchestra performance this past Thursday evening.  Our “photo of the week” is titled, “TD Orchestra Debut” and was submitted by TD fellow Jennifer Briggs who came to the President’s Room in Woolsey Hall to hear our musicians.  The short program gave everyone a sense of the fun and work everyone has had over this semester.  If anyone wants to join in the spring, please feel free to email TD orchestra conductor at paul.steffan@yale.edu.

Again we ask everyone to be mindful and respectful of Quiet Hours (11pm-8amand to keep the noise level low at all times in the college so that everyone can get good work and rest.  In addition, please take care of the study spaces throughout the college whether in the Dining Room or TD Library.  We do not want to create additional work on our wonderful TD Dining Hall and Facilities staff.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Snowy Night

Mary Oliver

Last night, an owl

in the blue dark

tossed

an indeterminate number

of carefully shaped sounds into

the world, in which,

a quarter of a mile away, I happened

to be standing.

I couldn’t tell

which one it was –

the barred or the great-horned

ship of the air –

it was that distant. But, anyway,

aren’t there moments

that are better than knowing something,

and sweeter? Snow was falling,

so much like stars

filling the dark trees

that one could easily imagine

its reason for being was nothing more

than prettiness. I suppose

if this were someone else’s story

they would have insisted on knowing

whatever is knowable – would have hurried

over the fields

to name it – the owl, I mean.

But it’s mine, this poem of the night,

and I just stood there, listening and holding out

my hands to the soft glitter

falling through the air. I love this world,

but not for its answers.

And I wish good luck to the owl,

whatever its name –

and I wish great welcome to the snow,

whatever its severe and comfortless

and beautiful meaning.

What does it mean for a life to go well? What would it look like for a life to be lived well? In short, what shape would a life worth living take? We will explore these questions through comparative exploration of the shape of the life advocated by several of the world’s normative traditions, both religious and nonreligious. The class will examine concrete instantiations of these traditions through contemporary exemplars drawn from outside the professional religious or philosophical spheres. Readings will be drawn from the founding texts of Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, utilitarianism, and Nietzscheanism.
