TIMOTHY DWIGHT NOTES & NEWS

WEEK OF 3/7/22

HL’S PIECES

Dear Red Lions,

Many thanks to Mott Woolley for pulling off their wonderful biannual skiing/snowboarding/tubing trip to Berkshire East this past weekend!  They did a terrific job working out all the COVID-19 guidelines to create a fun time for all.  The trip will be back in 2024!  Our “photo of the week” features our first-year lions Mariama Sow, Tor Charnholm, and Dona Ekwalla taking a quick photo break before hitting the slopes.

Many thanks to co-President, Jai Chadha, for sending in these photos of the group.

TD fielded 3 teams for last week’s Graduate Affiliates Trivia Night!  Although we did not win, everyone had a great time and we are grateful to TD GAs Sandra Sanchez and Lucero Estrella for helping to lead a team and Head GA, Xinyi Chen, for helping to organize the event.  Hopefully this event will be back again next year!

Senior Lions, please don’t forget to sign-up to join our TD senior class committee to help plan special events for senior week (the week of 5/16) and some special swag for your graduation.  Please register at this link by this Wednesday 3/9.

Here are some important events/deadlines for the next couple of weeks:
Tuesday 3/8 5:30pm TD Senior Mellon Forum (53 Wall Street)

Our Mellon series continues with presentations from Seniors Calvin Kaleel, Simone Koch-Costa, and Harry Rubin.  With the decrease in COVID-19 cases we will be able to go back to our original format of dinner from 5:30-6pm followed by presentations.  Please note that the dinner requires sign-up and are limited to seniors only.

Friday 3/11 6pm TD Senators (TD Common Room)
Come discuss any range of Yale policy issues with your TD Senators – Ryan Smith TD ‘24 and Matthew Merritt TD ‘24 to the YCC.  There will be hot chocolate and donuts from Donut Crazy so stop by their table on your way to and from dinner!

Friday 3/11 8:30-10pm Instant Ramen Study Break (TD Student Kitchen)
TD Student Kitchen Aide Grace MacDonald and AACC PL Sophia Lee are collaborating on our first ever Instant Ramen Study Break!  With midterms just around the corner, what better way to take a break than choosing from a wide sample of instant ramen, including Korean, Vietnamese, and Thai varieties!!!   A Due to COVID-19 restrictions, students must sign up in advance at this Google Form for a 15-minute time slot to pick up their ramen.   The form will turn off once the sign-ups fill up so don’t delay!

Saturday 3/12 & Sunday 3/13 11am-1:30pm (TD Common Room)
Mott is back selling more TD gear this weekend during brunch so stop by to purchase some of your favorite TD merch.  You’ll definitely want to be showing your TD pride and repping TD wherever you may be this upcoming Spring Break!

Monday 3/14 pm 9-10pm TD Buttery Pi Day Special (TD Buttery)
The TD Buttery is proud to offer a selection of low-price, delicious pie flavors to honor everyone’s favorite food-themed holiday!  Come on down and get a slice!

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Ashe,

HL

Digging
Seamus Heaney

Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests; snug as a gun.

Under my window, a clean rasping sound
When the spade sinks into gravelly ground:
My father, digging. I look down

Till his straining rump among the flowerbeds
Bends low, comes up twenty years away
Stooping in rhythm through potato drills
Where he was digging.

The coarse boot nestled on the lug, the shaft
Against the inside knee was levered firmly.
He rooted out tall tops, buried the bright edge deep
To scatter new potatoes that we picked,
Loving their cool hardness in our hands.

By God, the old man could handle a spade.
Just like his old man.

My grandfather cut more turf in a day
Than any other man on Toner’s bog.
Once I carried him milk in a bottle
Corked sloppily with paper. He straightened up
To drink it, then fell to right away
Nicking and slicing neatly, heaving sods
Over his shoulder, going down and down
For the good turf. Digging.

The cold smell of potato mould, the squelch and slap
Of soggy peat, the curt cuts of an edge
Through living roots awaken in my head.
But I’ve no spade to follow men like them.

Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests.
I’ll dig with it.

CHIME IN ON THE NEXT DEAN OF YALE COLLEGE!
Hi! I’m Maayan, and I have the privilege of soliciting student nominations for the next Dean of Yale College. Have you ever had an amazing professor who just understood the student experience like no one else? Have you ever had a great shmooze with your head of college and thought “she should really run this whole place!”? Have you had experiences that have prompted you to form opinions about what traits a dean should or shouldn’t have? I want to hear it all and pass this information on to the committee (confidentially). Please consider nominating someone you admire to be the next dean by filling out this survey, attending an office hour, or reaching out to me for a one-on-one chat in the near future. Would you like to organize an office hour specifically for your organization or group? I want to gather input from as diverse and wide of a group as possible. Let’s make it happen. Contact me at maayan.schoen@yale.edu

Residential Colleges Office Hour: TUESDAY, March 8, 9:00-10:00 pm. Meeting ID: 945 9140 8696
