TIMOTHY DWIGHT NOTES & NEWS

WEEK OF 4/8/2024

HL’S PIECES

Dear Red Lions,

Today is a big day… first there is an announcement at 6pm in the TD DIning Hall.  All will be revealed by Dean Pericles Lewis.

And, of course, today is the eclipse and we are getting 90+% of it in New Haven!  So get your protective eyewear ready.  I am sure it will be just as thrilling as last Friday’s earthquake as noted here by Senior Lion, Dion Ong!

Our “photo of the week” features our amazing Chubb event with Ta-Nehisi Coates this past Friday!  At Battell Chapel, he read from his forthcoming book, The Message, where he grapples with the complex histories of race, place, and power in three very different sites in the U.S. and around the globe.  He read from the portion of the book focused on his visit to Jerusalem and the West Bank as part of the Palestine Festival of Literature in May 2023.  Weaving together the complex histories and public memory of racial segregation andviolence in the domestic U.S., the Holocaust, and the the Occupied Territories he pushed all of us to see, think, and feel the full weight and complexity of the issues before us today. A video of his talk will be posted later this month for anyone who missed it.

He then joined us in the TD Dining Hall for a special dinner in his honor and spoke about the importance of courage and honesty as a writer and answered many questions.

We have again another full calendar of exciting dates and events for this week and next, so read slowly!!!

Wednesday 4/10 7-8:15pm Avatar Dinner with special guests Michaela Julia Murphy andBryan Konietzko (TD House)

We could not accommodate everyone who wanted to the dinner with Michaela Julia Murphy, the voice of Toph.  But know that she will be here for the week presenting at the Yale Student Film Festival.  Hopefully, Bryan Konietzko, one of the co-creators of Avatar , will make it to TD next year!

Friday 4/12 4:30pm Spin Class with TD Grad Affiliate Audrey Amezcua-Smith (PWG)

Our TD Grad Affiliate Audrey Amezcua-Smith is hosting another spin class for TD students.  A distance runner, foodie, licensed scuba diver, she also happens to be a trained spin instructor!  The event is entirely free and will take place on the 5th floor of PWG.  Audrey has room for 10 participants for this workout!

Sunday 4/14 11:00am-1:30pm TD Berry Brunch (Dining Hall)

One of TD’s most beloved traditions… a celebration of spring and berries just when we need it most!  Enjoy the omelet station, bagels and lox, and the scrumptious spread.  As always our dining hall staff will knock themselves out putting out the feast and showing the love.  Make sure to get your TD sticker.  Family dinner protocol so all off-campus TDers will dine for free.

Tuesday 4/16 4-6pm YC3 Accountability Café (TD Thompson Room)

Need to catch up on work before classes end?  Need an accountability partner to finish up your lingering tasks? YC3 will be taking over the Thompson Room to offer an Accountability Café–a chance to get work done before or after dinner. Come tell Community Wellness Specialist Whitney Simmons your goal and how long you need to be there for (a minimum of one hour). You decide how often Whitney checks in with you and what level of encouragement you would like!   We are providing Bubble Tea and Face Masks to the first 20 to come!

Sunday 4/21 3pm Senior Recital for Nicholas Cerny (TD House)

Enjoy the beautiful performance of Senior Lion, Nicholas Cerny!  He will be playing pieces featuring works for the violin and piano by Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Bartok, and Oshima.  We’ll end with a light cookie reception!

Sunday 4/21 8:30pm Julian Hornik TD ’17 at Joe’s Pub (Public Theater in NYC)

Our very own TD alum, Julian Hornik, is offering 4 free tickets to attend his solo performance at the Public Theater in New York City!  A 2023 recipient of the Jonathan Larsen grant to support musical theater composers and librettists, he is back at the Public for one-night!  This is an all-ages show – despite being at Joe’s Pub – so open to all TDers.  Since it’s only 4 tickets and you are traveling via train (TD will provide), I will not be doing a lottery.  I am going to be giving out the tickets in pairs or a group of 4. So write me at mary.lui@yale.edu and let me know if you would like to claim the tickets and who is going with you.

Lastly, Bulldog Days is just around the corner and will take place next Monday 4/15 to Wednesday 4/17.  So get ready to welcome the Pre-Frosh!

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Àshe,
HL
