TIMOTHY DWIGHT NOTES & NEWS

WEEK OF 4/15/2024

HL’S PIECES

Dear Red Lions,

What a week!  We started last Monday with the total solar eclipse and the big announcement that the next Head of College of TD will be Professor Michal Beth Dinkler, a New Testament scholar and member of the faculty at the Yale Divinity School.  And we ended with yesterday’s spectacular Berry Brunch put on by our amazing DH staff!

We had such a busy week last week with much of it captured in pictures that it’s hard to choose a “photo of the week” so let’s do a photo round up…

First, we have this time lapse video by Leon Lufkin TD ’25 and a photo from last Monday’s solar eclipse from Lynna Thai TD ’27 who took this shot at peak totality at 3:27pm…

Congratulations to Mott for hosting the first Eli Whitney reunion last Wednesday with current students and alumni and Dean Risa Sodi!
And special thanks to TD Grad Affiliate Audrey Amezcua-Smith for leading yet another high energy spin class!

Speaking of photos, we are collecting pictures from TD ’24 for the senior class dinner video.  If you have photos of you or other Senior Lions please upload them here. We want to include as many folks as possible!

Here are our important dates and events for this week and next:

Monday 4/15 9:30pm Crispy Tuna Rice Special (TD Buttery)

Our Buttery will be doing its last pop up special for the month of April!  Tonight’s will feature “crispy tuna rice” made from crispy rice, gochujang, sesame oil, kewpie tuna, andgarnished with jalapeño.  At $2/piece they will sell out fast!

Tuesday 4/16 4-6pm YC3 Accountability Café (TD Thompson Room)

Need to catch up on work before classes end?  Need an accountability partner to finish up your lingering tasks? YC3 will be taking over the Thompson Room to offer an Accountability Café–a chance to get work done before or after dinner. Come tell Community Wellness Specialist Whitney Simmons your goal and how long you need to be there for (a minimum of one hour). You decide how often Whitney checks in with you and what level of encouragement you would like!   We are providing Bubble Tea and Face Masks to the first 20 to come!

Wednesday 4/17 10pm TD CCEs Study Break (TD Thompson Room)

Join our TD CCEs – Amal Biskin, Josephine Holubkov, and Isaac Monks – for pizza anddiscussion on the current Yale sexual climate survey.  We hope that you’ll stop by with questions and fill out the survey!

Sunday 4/21 3pm Senior Recital for Nicholas Cerny (TD House)

Enjoy the beautiful performance of Senior Lion, Nicholas Cerny!  He will be playing pieces featuring works for the violin and piano by Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Bartok, and Oshima.  We’ll end with a light cookie reception!

Sunday 4/21 8:30pm Julian Hornik TD ’17 at Joe’s Pub (Public Theater in NYC)

Last call for tickets to see TD Alum, Julian Hornik, at the Public Theater!  A 2023 recipient of the Jonathan Larsen grant to support musical theater composers and librettists, he is back at the Public for one-night!  This is an all-ages show – despite being at Joe’s Pub – so open to all TDers.  We still have tickets so the first to email will get them.  Happy to give them out in pairs or more.  Write me at mary.lui@yale.edu and let me know if you would like to claim the tickets and who is going with you.

Wednesday 4/24 4:30pm “The State of Audio/Visual Journalism: A Talk with New Yorker, NY Times, and This American Life” (TD House)

Join us for our last tea of the 23-24 academic year featuring Aaron Reiss, digital mapmaker and storyteller who is serving as this year’s TD College Seminar Instructor.  He will be in conversation with special guests: Emanuelle Berry, Executive Producer of This American Life; Alicia M. DeSantis, Deputy Editor at The New York Times; and David Kofahl, Director of Interactives at The New Yorker.  A must-attend event for anyone interested in journalism.

Thursday 4/25 Hilary Hahn Rehearsal at the NYPHIL

We have completed the lottery drawing for this field trip. Students going on the trip will receive additional instructions by the end of the week.

Friday 4/26 TD Day (TD Courtyards)

Save the date for our big celebration of the end of classes hosted by our TD SAC.  Mott will have yet another one-in-a-kind original t-shirt.  Our Dining Hall will be doing a cookout for lunch!  This will be Family Dinner protocol so all off-campus TDers will get to eat for free.

Without further ado, here is a very quick word from Dean Mahurin…

Àshe,
HL

BY SARA TEASDALE

Life has loveliness to sell,
     All beautiful and splendid things,
Blue waves whitened on a cliff,
Soaring fire that sways and sings,
And children’s faces looking up
Holding wonder like a cup.

Life has loveliness to sell,
Music like a curve of gold,
Scent of pine trees in the rain,
Eyes that love you, arms that hold,
And for your spirit’s still delight,
Holy thoughts that star the night.

Spend all you have for loveliness,
     Buy it and never count the cost;
For one white singing hour of peace
Count many a year of strife well lost,
And for a breath of ecstasy
Give all you have been, or could be.
