
Interested in helping immigrant and refugee youth get settled in New Haven?
Come volunteer at IRIS (Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services) at 323 Temple Street (right next door from TD)! Below is a list of the available programs. It is recommended that you commit to one time a week for any of these programs. Please fill out this IRIS Volunteering Interest Form if you are interested in any of these programs!
IRIS After School
When: M, T, W, Th; 3:15-5:15 pm
Who: 3rd-8th grade newly arrived students (mainly from Syria, Afghanistan, Congo, Sudan)
What: game playing, chatting (English practice) homework help, companionship
Special Note: Mondays and Wednesdays there is one-on-one literacy tutoring from 4 to 5:15, so those are times a lot of volunteers are needed.
Youth Leadership
When: M, W (young women); T, Th (young men); 2:30-4:00 or 4:15 pm
Who: 9th-12th graders, mix of recent arrivals and those who have been here a couple of years (from various countries)
What: game playing, chatting (English practice), homework help, companionship
Family Literacy
When M, T, W, Th, F; 9:30 am to noon
Who: infants, toddlers & preschoolers (mainly Afghan)
What: assisting with the care of infants; assisting pre-school readiness teachers with activities and care for toddlers and preschoolers
