TIMOTHY DWIGHT NOTES & NEWS

WEEK OF 8/30/21

HL’S PIECES

Dear Red Lions,

Welcome to new 2021-2022 academic year and our first edition of Notes and News, our weekly TD newsletter!

For those of you who are new to TD, please know that our weekly newsletter comes out every Monday – with the exception of holidays – and it is chock full of important information about the college. In my part, I will share our college’s event listings, application deadlines, and other important TD announcements.  In Dean’s portion, she will share important academic deadlines and opportunities.

AND we feature a “photo of the week” submitted by a member of our TD community – students, staff, and fellows –capturing life inside and outside of our courtyard.  If you would like to send in a photo, please write up a caption and name who is in the photo.

Neither Hurricane Henri nor a heatwave deterred our amazing TD staff, aides, and move-in crew from rolling out the welcome wagon and moving in the class of 2025.  They deserve to be featured as this year’s first “photo of the week” submitted by our new Operations Manager, Zina Anwar!

My HoC TD Office Hours start this Wednesday 9/1 and are on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:30-3:30pm.  I will offer both in-person (outdoors on my patio) or Zoom options.  To make an appointment, please email Deanna Caplan, my assistant and our Senior Administrator in the Head of College Office.  Her email is Deanna.caplan@yale.edu and she will be happy to work with you to set up an appointment.

Here are some more important TD events and dates for this week:

Monday 8/30 Creative and Performing Arts (CPA) Application Portal Opens

After a virtual CPA year, I am delighted to say that we are working hard to have an in-person performance and art making!  To learn more about the CPA and the various public health and safety guidelines, please go the Creative and Performing Arts website.  To make an application for you or your student organization, please go to the Yale Grants and Fellowships database you mayaccess the application by clicking on this link.  Please remember that you need to check in with me regarding your application so make sure to make an appointment prior to submission.

Monday 8/30 6-7:30pm TD Sophomore Picnic (TD Courtyard)

We are so excited to celebrate your class’s return to campus.  The Dining Hall is putting together an upscale picnic menu and we will provide a picnic blanket per suite to use to dine al fresco.  The blankets are for your room to keep so hold onto them for future TD courtyard events.  Each TD sophomore will also receive a TD Bell as it has been TD tradition!

Monday 8/30 7:30-8:30pm Tyng Cup Celebration, Part 2 (TD Courtyard)

Come celebrate our magnificent Tyng Cup victory with the class that gave us the 100 pt lead that clinched our victory!  Please remember that we have to stagger the celebration to comply with Yale’s outdoor gatherings limit of 50 people:

7:30-8pm Sophomores (continuation of Sophomore Picnic Dinner)
8-8:30pm Non-sophomores (50 or less in the courtyard)

We will pass out winning Tyng Cup shirts – yes, there are 2 shirts – to our sophomores.  Ice cream is available to all as long as supplies last.

Tuesday 8/31 5-5:45pm TD First Years Photo Booth & A Cappella Serenade (TD Courtyard)

We are setting up a TD photo booth to capture TD 2025!  To comply with Yale’s gatherings policy, please come out to the courtyward with your FroCo Group at the following times.  Our photographer will be taking a suite picture and also a FroCo group picture to commemorate the start of your time at Yale.

5:00pm George Hua & Katerina Melnyk
5:10pm Clayton Land & Xavier Ruiz
5:20pm Rachel Roberts & Erti Tushe
5:30pm Oscar Lopez & Ihea Inyama
5:40pm Athena Stenor & Calvin Kaleel

We will also be hosting special guests, Magevet and Spizzwinks, two of Yale’s wonderful singing groups.  They will serenade you during this hour.

Tuesday 8/31 6-7:30pm TD First-Years Dinner (TD Dining Hall)

Your first time dining in our beautiful dining hall will be a very memorable first-year dinner served up by our amazing TD Dining Hall staff.  Please come through our main town hall entrance and prepare to line up to swipe into dinner starting at 5:45pm.

Monday 9/13 TD Community Night (Save the Date)

Our own TD talent show is one of our biggest and best TD traditions!  We are planning for a live hybrid remote/live event in the TD courtyard.  More information will be forthcoming.  For now, please save the date and start thinking about what you would like to share with the community!

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Àshe,
HL

An Aspect of Love, Alive in the Ice and Fire
Gwendolyn Brooks

In a package of minutes there is this We.
How beautiful.
Merry foreigners in our morning,
we laugh, we touch each other,
are responsible props and posts.

A physical light is in the room.

Because the world is at the window
we cannot wonder very long.

You rise. Although
genial, you are in yourself again.
I observe
your direct and respectable stride.
You are direct and self-accepting as a lion
in Afrikan velvet. You are level, lean,
remote.

There is a moment in Camaraderie
when interruption is not to be understood.
I cannot bear an interruption.
This is the shining joy;
the time of not-to-end.

On the street we smile.
We go
in different directions
down the imperturbable street.
