TIMOTHY DWIGHT NOTES & NEWS

WEEK OF 8/29/22

HL’S PIECES

Dear Red Lions,

Welcome to the new 2022-23 academic year and our first edition of Notes and News, our weekly TD newsletter!

For those of you who are new to TD, please know that our weekly newsletter comes out every Monday – with the exception of holidays – and it is chock full of important information about our college. In my portion, I will share event listings, application deadlines, and other important TD announcements.  In Dean’s portion, she will offer important academic deadlines and opportunities and a poem for the week.

AND we feature a “photo of the week” submitted by a member of our TD community – students, staff, administrators, and fellows –capturing life inside and outside of our courtyard.  If you would like to send in a photo, please write up a caption and name who is in the photo and shoot it my way.

To get us started, here is this week’s “photo of the week” titled the “Return of Big Sibs/Little Sibs” from TD Aide, Jack Denning.  He took a quick break from his duties dispensing ice cream to take this photo of TD sib bonding!

Our TD Dining Hall is hiring student managers so if anyone is interested, please email our Dining Hall Manager, Samantha Moore, at Samantha.moore@yale.edu.

Here are some more important TD events and dates for the next two weeks:

Tuesday 8/30 5:30-7:30pm TD First Years Dinner (TD Dining Hall)
We are excited for this special dinner with sit down table service!  Please remember to come to the courtyard at 5:15pm for an informal class photo and then head inside to pick up your TD college pin before sitting down for dinner.  All sophomores, juniors, seniors on the Yale Dining meal plan should head to Schwarzman for dinner.

Wednesday 8/31 4:00-5:00pm First Day of Classes Lemonade Stand (TD Courtyard)
Join the TD children – Aby, Dior, Divera, Daniel, and Anna – at their delicious homemade Lemonade Stand to celebrate the first day of class!  Meet our wonderful Residential Fellows families – Justin and Tricia Simon as well as Amy Bei and Sidiya Mbodj – who live with their adorable children in Entryway B in the upper courtyard.

Monday 9/5 Labor Day Road Race (New Haven Green)
Last call to register for this year’s race with the homestretch right in front of TD’s Temple Street gate.  To get one of the free spots, please go to the race registration link and type in the code “TimothyDwight5k” for the 5k race and “TimothyDwight2022” for the half marathon/20k spots.  First come, first served!

Monday 9/5 First SAC Meeting (TD Common Room) 10:23pm
Our Student Activities Committee (SAC) is back and ready to roll, and they are recruiting! If there’s an event you want to see like a cookout, party, movie night, or food truck, you’re interested in helping to plan the TD Formal, or you’re just looking for a way to jump into TD events and life, then SAC is the place to be! Weekly SAC meetings are on Mondays at 10:23 P.M. in the Common Room.  Join in the brainstorming and help make your ideas come true, or just come for some pizza and to be in the know!

Monday 9/5 TD Summer Storage Closes (TD Multipurpose Room)
We will have aides working TD Summer Storage everyday from 2-4pm and 8-10pm through Monday 9/5.  If you have any issues retrieving your storage please come to the TD HoC office to let us know.  Otherwise, if anything is still left on the morning of 9/6 it will get donated to the local Goodwill office.  Once we clear and reset the room we will be able to reopen the gym!

Thursday 9/8 SAC Movie Night (TD Lower Courtyard) 7:50-9:45pm
SAC is excited to host its first big courtyard event of the year… and it will be a movie night! Grab a blanket and your friends to sit back, relax, and enjoy the end of add/drop with a movie. They’ll be showing “Coco” and passing out movie candy, you won’t want to miss it!

Sunday 9/11 11:59pm Creative and Performing Arts (CPA) Deadline
The application portal is open!  Please make sure to meet with HL to talk over your project ideas before submitting an application.  To make an appointment during my TD Office Hours please see below.  Please also make sure to go to the Creative and Performing Arts website and review the application guidelines.  The application may be accessed through the Grants and Fellowships database.

Monday 9/12 8:30-10:30pm TD Community Night (TD Dining Hall)
Our own TD talent show is one of our biggest and best TD traditions and we are excited to be back in the Dining Hall again!  We have welcomed musicians, magicians, jugglers, whistlers, stand up comedians, and so much more… so start thinking about your act.  And please know that we especially want to encourage our first-years to perform!  More information will be forthcoming.  For now, please save the date and start thinking about what you would like to share with the community!

Please note that HoC TD Office Hours start this week and are on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:30-3:30pm.  I will offer both in-person (outdoors on my patio) or Zoom options.  To make an appointment, please email me at mary.lui@yale.edu.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Àshe,
HL
