TIMOTHY DWIGHT NOTES & NEWS

WEEK OF 12/12/22

HL’S PIECES

Dear Red Lions,

I hope everyone’s Reading Week is off to a great start especially after last night’s very popular SAC Study Break with last-minute substitution, September in Bangkok!  Tonight will be Insomia cookies at 10pm and I will be bringing out a new TD puzzle!  For a complete schedule of study breaks – food and non-food – please see below!

Speaking of food … our “photo of the week” is from TD Photography Aide Demi Lee ‘24 and features our TD Dining Hall Manager, Ellen Habelow, with TD student manager, Shtile Shuaipaj, with her roommate Anna Zhao.  Many thanks to our Dining Hall staff for pulling off such a delicious and gorgeous dinner. Please go here for more photographs of the event.

And many thanks to our Art Studio Aides for holding one last study break with Gingerbread house making.  The studio will stay open until 12/18 but only for students who have already been trained to finish out any class projects.  If you borrowed anything from the art studio, please bring it back so that the aides can take a full inventory before leaving for the semester.  You may reach them at alex.yu@yale.edu or naomi.sellers@yale.edu.

If you love arts & crafts and have always wanted to knit or crochet, check out this Friday’s study break featuring Suxiao Yang at the TD House.  She and I will teach anyone who’d like to get started on a project that can be finished for a special holiday gift!  All yarn and needles will be provided along with some delicious snacks.

“Think how much any individual mind, any brain, is enlarged by what we can know through books and through literature — places, people, ideas that we would never otherwise experience, things much larger than anyone could contain in his or her own person. People crave this… And each successive work of literature expands the possibilities of our language, deepening our expressive capacity. In almost every major literature there are works that make you love being human, and make you love and revere the humanity of other people. That is the great potential of any art.” (Marilynne Robinson)

END OF TERM POLICIES

Remember that, in addition to being the last day of exams, December 21 is also the final possible date for the submission of term papers and term projects.  Of course, individual instructors may set deadlines for earlier than this date, even as they have full discretion to set deadlines as late as this date.  Beyond December 21, coursework may be submitted only with a Temporary Incomplete from me; your instructor cannot set deadlines or issue extensions for beyond December 21, even in graduate or professional school courses.  Yale College considers such deadlines and extensions invalid, and the work will not be counted toward your grade.

As with Dean’s Extensions, the Academic Regulations permit Temporary Incompletes in only a limited range of circumstances; contact me right away if you anticipate needing one so that we can discuss your situation.  Postponements of scheduled final examinations (via ABX: “All But eXam”) also require my intervention, and may be authorized under the same set of circumstances as Dean’s Extensions and Temporary Incompletes.  As always, if you find yourself in any kind of trouble relating to the submission of work or the taking of exams, let me know right away – I’m very happy to consult on these points
