TIMOTHY DWIGHT NOTES & NEWS

WEEK OF 10/3/22

HL’S PIECES

Dear Red Lions,

Judging from today’s cooler temps, October is here!  This often means the start of midterms so I hope everyone is taking good care.

This week’s “photo of the week” is the first time in the history of Notes and News that I am getting a submission from another Head of College.  I received this terrific note and pic from HoC Julia Adams of Hopper College featuring Rory Ashmeade TD ’26 on the saxophone (right) as part of their Sunday jazz brunch series in the Hopper Dining Hall.  Rory played with Hopper friends, Jarron and Gabriel.

Way to go, Rory!  Her performance is reminding me that I have heard from our TD alums that we also used to do a brunch music series back in the day.  So if any musical TDers out there are interested in performing in such a series please let me know!

Last Tuesday evening, we held our Senior Mellon Forum information session.  For anyone who missed the session, please know that our coordinators Alex Werrell TD ’13 and Devin Lau ’09 will be sending out more information and a sign-up form.  Please remember that seniors who received Richter funding this summer for their thesis are required to present, preferably in the fall semester.  The Mellon funding application is also now available through the Yale Fellowships and Grants Database and funding is on a first-come, first-served basis.  Please feel free to email me at mary.lui@yale.edu if you have any questions about funding eligibility or the on-line application.

Here are some more important TD events and dates for the next two weeks:

Thursday 10/6 4:30pm TD Tea with April Koh TD ’16, CEO/Founder of Spring Health (TD House)

TD alum who was Forbes 30 Under 30 2018!  April will discuss her journey to becoming the CEO and Co-Founder of Spring Health, a comprehensive health benefit for employers and health plans, that is currently valued at more than $2 billion.  Please note that the post-Tea dinner with April is now full and all attendees have been notified.

Saturday 10/8 TD 4-5:30pm Family Weekend Reception (TD House)

We are thrilled to reopen the beautiful TD House for this year’s Family Weekend reception!  Please stop by for some delicious refreshments.  It will be a delight to meet/reconnect with your families!

Wednesday 10/12 4pm Chubb Lecture with Jill Ellis (SSS Auditorium) and 6:45pm dinner (TD Dining Hall)

We are excited for our Chubb events with Jill Ellis, FIFA two-time world champion coach!  Ms. Ellis will be sitting for an interview and conversation at SSS auditorium at 4pm and joining us for a special dinner in the TD Dining Hall at 6:45pm.  To sign-up for the student dinner, please go here to this link. The dinner sign-ups will close on Sunday 10/9 at 11:59pm.

Saturday 10/15 10:00-12pm TD Outing to Wooster Square Farmer’s Market

Do you need a break from the Yale bubble? Eager to explore New Haven? Our New Haven Outreach Aides, Emily Xu TD ‘24 and Julian Barrera TD’ 25, are taking TDers to the Wooster Square Farmers’ Market. Meet them at the TD courtyard at 10 AM to walk over and visit a variety of vendors and locally grown products available for purchase!

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Àshe,
HL

“Housekeeping”
Natasha Trethewey

We mourn the broken things, chair legs
wrenched from their seats, chipped plates,
the threadbare clothes. We work the magic
of glue, drive the nails, mend the holes.
We save what we can, melt small pieces
of soap, gather fallen pecans, keep neck bones
for soup. Beating rugs against the house,
we watch dust, lit like stars, spreading
across the yard. Late afternoon, we draw
the blinds to cool the rooms, drive the bugs
out. My mother irons, singing, lost in reverie.
I mark the pages of a mail-order catalog,
listen for passing cars. All day we watch
for the mail, some news from a distant place.
