Notes and News - Week of September 16, 2019

September 16, 2019

Dear Red Lions,

First a hearty congratulations to all of our amazing performers for creating a fabulous “Community Night” last Monday!  We had a record number of performances/performers and it was one of the most varied and linguistically-diverse shows ever!  I noted the use of English, Chinese, Spanish, Swedish, Scottish, and Russian – wow!  To give you an idea of some of the new performances this year, I’m including a short clip from TD sophomore Simone Koch Kosta’s jump rope performance as well as first years Michael Chen (piano) and Francis Fedora (cello) performing Schumann!

Our “photo of the week” comes from Alisia Pan ‘23 who captured the fun and intensity of our currently undefeated TD IM ping pong team!  If you’d like to play or cheer the team on, here are the upcoming matches for this week:

Tues 9/17 at 9pm vs. Trumbull.  Meet in TD Courtyard at 8:45pm.

Thurs 9/19 at 8pm vs. Hopper.  Meet in TD Courtyard at 7:45pm.

Many thanks to SAC and president, Virginia Davis ’22, for bringing back Courtyard Movie Night with “Spirited Away”!  We could not have picked a better late summer evening to sit out under the stars and watch this Hayao Miyazaki classic.  If you would like to support SAC and get involved with their work planning great events for TD, please go to there Monday night meetingsin the TD Common Room.  Pizza will be served!

I am delighted to introduce our Graduate Student Affiliates (GAs) for TD.  These are graduate students from around the university in PhD and professional masters programs who are working with the college to provide mentoring support for the undergraduate community.  To get a sense of this wonderful group, please go to their webpage.  Feel free to email them directly to get in touch!  Sophomore lions will be getting a note this week about a new mentoring program involving our GAs that we’re piloting this year.  So stay tuned for that email!

Here are some more important TD events for the rest of September:

Monday 9/30 6-7:30pm Tea/Dinner with Dr. Liz Delasobera, Head Team Doctor for the Washington Capitals (TD House)

Come join our first tea of the year with Dr. Liz Delasobera ’02.  An American studies major, Dr. Delasobera was also the captain of the Yale women’s tennis.  She went onto medical school at Stanford and is now a sports medicine specialist.  She’ll talk about her work with the Caps as well as her efforts at creating guidelines on concussions and athletes.  To make this tea as accessible as possible to our varsity athletes, I’ve shifted the time to 6pm and we’ll serve a hearty dinner.  So feel free to come straight from practice to the TD House and meet Dr. Delasobera!

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Áshe,

HL
