Notes and News – Week of 9/10

HL’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

Hope you all had a great weekend and are ready to submit your schedules as we approach the end of the fall semester Shopping Period!

Now that you know what classes you are taking, you may be interested in getting involved in our various TD student committees.  Here are a few opportunities for this year:

Mott Woolley Council is the Student Council of TD.  They will be holding new elections next week.  If you would like to run, please submit a statement (maximum 300 words) by 6pm this Friday, September 14thvia email to noah.macey@yale.edu.  Your statement should include your past experiences and qualifications as well as your ideas for projects for the Mott Woolley council.

Student Activities Committee (SAC) meets every Monday evening in the TD Common Room at 10:23pm.  Please stop by to help with organizing wonderful events for the community such as the Fall Formal, Final Exam Study Breaks, and more!  If you would like more information, please email TD sophomores Ryan Tsedevsuren and Sarah Cameron at ryan.tsedevsuren@yale.edu and sarah.cameron@yale.edu.

College Seminar Committee works to select the next college seminar hosted by Timothy Dwight College for the spring 2019 semester.  TD is looking for students interested in participating as the Student Coordinator for this year’s selection committee.  Duties include recruiting TDers to be a part of the selection committee and chairing meetings to go over potential seminars.  The best part of the student coordinator role comes in early October when you interview potential college seminar instructors and hear their pitch for new courses.  If you are interested in taking on the role, please email mary.lui@yale.edu.

This week’s “photo of the week” is titled “Karaage!” and celebrates our Buttery team under the new leadership of Michael Ai ’20 (left) who took over from TD senior Jack Atwater (right).  In the middle is Buttery veteran Jack Brownrigg ’19.  Along with TD sophomores Allie Olson and Robbie Skoronski, the team cooked and completely sold out of their 10 pounds of karaage – Japanese fried chicken – in 10 minutes.  Wow!  But as you can see from this picture of TD juniors, folks still happily enjoyed eating Tempura vegetables.

We are looking forward to the Buttery’s official reopening this coming Sunday evening 9/16.  Any TDers interested in joining the Buttery staff should go to this link to sign up and Michael will get in touch!

The Selin Lounge reservation system is up and running.  Anyone interested in having access for the academic year will need to come into the TD HoC office to fill out a request form and sign the new user policy.  Once you submit the form to the HoC office, the staff will activate your access to the lounge.  If you would like to reserve the space in advance, please use the online sign-up site.

The TD Student Kitchen sign ups will come back on line by the Friday 9/14.  Please go to the webpage to for instructions on how to make a reservation.

Here are our important events for this week:

Tuesday 9/11 8:30pm TD Community Night (TD Dining Hall)

Come early to get your seats for our fall Community Night!  We have a great line up with many new faces performing for the first-time, including members of our wonderful new class of 2022!  Magic, music, comedy and more will be performed throughout the night.  As usual, our pizza intermission will take place at 9:30pm followed by the TD Community Chamber Orchestra and our other fabulous acts!

Saturday 9/15 7-9pm TD Board Games Night (TD House)

Head on over to the TD House for board games!  Drop in for a quick game of Ultimate Werewolf or stay to play some of the more involved strategy games like Settlers of Cataan.  Who has sheep???  We are excited to share our vast family game library with the TD community.  We’ll also have a great snacks and drinks.

Mark your calendars for this great future event:

Saturday 9/29 11-1:30pm Football Tailgate (TD Upper Courtyard)

Our first home game of the season is against the University of Maine!  Fuel up before going out to support the team!  We’ll have a full bagel and lox bar and breakfast sandwiches to go.  “Family dinner” protocols are in effect, so off-campus folks come on back to TD to eat and celebrate!

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Áshe,

HL

YALE POLICY LAB

The Policy Lab provides Yale students a physical space and dynamic programming to conduct data-intensive policy-related investigations, develop specialized technical skills, and engage with policymakers. During the past academic year, we organized student working groups on issues like mass incarceration and educational inequality, gave students opportunities to gain policy expertise from former U.S. Senators, and much more. We hope you will join us this coming year for more exciting programming. Please join our email list  to learn more about future events.

We would also like to invite you to participate in our first event of the fall semester. On Wednesday, September 19th from 2:30 to 3:30 PM we will be hosting a discussion on “Civil Discourse in an Uncivil Age: The Quest for Post-Partisan Citizenship” with Alexander Heffner, the host of The Open Mind on PBS. We hope you can join us for this exciting discussion about partisan polarization and its effects on media and politics. Please click here to learn more and RSVP. This event will be held in the Policy Lab, which is located at 77 Prospect Street.

This group will provide feedback and share new ideas about specific teaching and learning topics during four in-person meetings per academic year. The group will share and discuss personal experiences from the classroom and other learning environments. Diverse viewpoints and backgrounds will produce useful suggestions and out-of-the-box suggestions for the CTL to try out. Apply to be a member of the CTL Student Focus Group by filling out a short form on their website.
