Dear Red Lions,

As shopping period begins to wind down, we look forward to continuing our Fireside Chats for our First Years and the MLK Keynote Address with Bree Newsome titled “Chaos or Community: Fifty Years Later, Where Do We Go from Here?”

Our “picture of the week” features Opening Night at the TD Buttery this past Sunday evening! Our Buttery crew started the semester off with a great grilled cheese and tomato soup night. I am excited to announce that TD sophomore Michael Ai will be taking over the position of co-manager of the TD Buttery. He will work with TD junior Jack Atwater. We thank TD senior Tongil Ko for his 4 years of dedicated service to the TD Buttery! If you want to stay in touch with the Buttery, please join their Facebook page.

We are moving TD Spring Community Night from Monday to Wednesday January 31st. It will begin from 8:30-10:30pm and we’ll have the usual pizza intermission. We will send out the sign-up link this week.

Sign ups have started for the Mott Woolley TD Ski Trip on Saturday 2/3. I believe we already have ½ the bus filled so please come to the office this week and pay your deposit – $25 for skiing/snowboarding or $10 for tubing – if you would like to go. Please remember that we only do the ski trip every other year so it will not come around again until spring 2020.

This semester, I will hold my TD office hours on Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 1:30-3:30pm. Please email me to make an appointment!

Here are the great events that we have planned for the college these next two weeks:

Monday 1/22 4pm Creative and Performing Arts (CPA) Deadline

This semester’s CPA proposals are due! Don’t forget the online system shuts down at 4pm so do not be late!

Tuesday 1/23 7-8:30pm Wine Tasting with David Swensen (TD House)

David Swensen, Chief Investment Officer at Yale, has graciously offered to host a red wine tasting with TD seniors! We still have a couple of spaces left so if you forgot to sign up, email me at mary.lui@yale.edu ASAP. First come first served!

The spring semester Mellon Forum starts up again! Looking forward to celebrating the hard work of our seniors!

UPCOMING DATES AND DEADLINES:

Jan. 24 (Wednesday) Final course schedules due for the Class of 2021.

Jan. 25 (Thursday) Final course schedules due for the Classes of 2019 and 2020.

Jan. 26 (Friday) Final course schedules due for the Class of 2018.
Last day for students in the Class of 2018 to petition for permission to compete the requirements of two majors.

Jan. 30 (Tuesday) Final deadline to apply for a spring-term Leave of Absence. See Leave of Absence, Withdrawal, and Reinstatement.
Withdrawal from Yale College on or before this date entitles a student to a full rebate of spring-term tuition. See Undergraduate Regulations.

INTERVENING IN BIAS INCIDENTS: STRATEGIES FOR ACTION IN THE MOMENT

Intervening in a bias incident makes a big difference, both for the individuals involved and for the whole community, and yet bystanders sometimes hesitate to act. Hosted by student and professional staff of the Yale College Dean’s Office, this workshop focuses on practical strategies for interrupting bias and harassment, and for supporting those targeted by it. All members of the Yale community are welcome, but pre-registration is required via the website.

TEACH WITH THE U.S. GRANT FOUNDATION

Opportunity: Since 1953, the U.S. Grant Foundation has provided exceptional summer academic enrichment programs for gifted New Haven Public Schools middle school students at Old Campus’s Dwight Hall. We are currently hiring seven summer teachers as well as two year-long co-directors (who serve as the program’s teaching leadership, administration, and nonprofit board members). Yale undergraduates get the chance to teach creative, self-developed courses about their passions and develop their teaching skills—while giving local students the chance to expand their academic horizons beyond the classroom.

Who Should Apply: Ideal candidates should be passionate about education, invested in the New Haven community, good with children, and eager to improve their teaching skills. Visit our website for a full list of teacher responsibilities and FAQs.

Compensation: $3,400 over the course of the summer, in addition to some meals covered by the foundation.

Housing: Except in extenuating circumstances, teachers are required to live together in a U.S. Grant house. Rent varies from year to year, but generally runs from $600–1000 dollars total for the summer.

Dates: The 2017 summer program runs from June 25^ndto August 3^th. All teachers will be required to arrive in New Haven by June 15th for teacher training. Spring training dates will be determined after hiring.

Application: Complete the following application by Sunday, February 11^th.
