Notes and News – Week of 2/25/2019

HL’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

We had a lovely trip to New Haven’s local Ralph Walker Rink as you can see from our “photo of the week” titled “TD Goes Ice Skating”!  It’s great to see the local rink come back to life after having been left empty for three years!  And TD’s support will help the New Haven park district keep the rink running for everyone – young and old – in the New Haven community to enjoy.

Speaking of photos… I received this gorgeous cover photo from Kinsale Hueston ’22 with the amazing news that she was featured in “a photo essay for Time Magazine’s special Optimists Issue curated by Ava Duvernay as an artist representing my decade (teens).”

Here are the links to the article and to the Optimists Issue online.

Believe it or not, we are already into midterms and spring break is just a couple of weeks away!  If you plan to be on campus over spring break and like to run, TD will be sponsoring 8 runners for the March 23rd Savin Rock Half Marathon/Marathon in neighboring West Haven (http://www.shorelinesharks.com/Events/Savin.htm).  First-year Josh Ip will be running the marathon and driving runners to and from the race. If you are interested, please email him at joshua.ip@yale.edu or sign-up in the TD HoC office.  We’ll register you all as a group.

Here are our events for this week and next:

Thursday 2/28 6-7:30pm TD Sophomore Class Dinner (TD House)

We are looking forward to celebrate with the sophomore class!  The committee has come up with a fun menu featuring Thai, Vietnamese, and Mediterranean dishes from local New Haven restaurants.  Come enjoy great food and company!

Friday 3/1 8pm SAC Movie Night – UP! (TD Dining Hall)

Come to the SAC spring movie night featuring the 2009 favorite Pixar film, Up!  As usual, we’ll have movie candy and snacks for the viewing!

Saturday 3/2 8pm TUIB ‘n’ Friends Concert (TD Dining Hall)

We are happy to welcome back TUIB back to the TD Dining Hall!  Tangled Up in Blue’s TUIB ‘n’ Friends is a collaborative performance featuring sets by TUIB and singer-songwriters Rayo Oyeyemi and Charlotte Foote, and Yale’s first and only Latin band, La Orquestra Ttertulia!  This is a free concert open to all students!

Monday 3/4 Open Figure Drawing Studio (School of Art)

Want to practice figure drawing?  TD art studio aide, Sarah Jho, will be leading a trip from TD to the Art School’s open figure drawing sessions, which run weekly on Monday 8-10PM. All drawing supplies will be provided, and the nude model will take us through a variety of poses. Email sarah.jho@yale.edu by Sunday night, 3/2, if you want to join the group.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Àshe,
HL

about being happy?

Sometimes I’m as happy

YALE CENTER FOR LANGUAGE STUDY

The Yale Center for Language Study is now accepting applications for fall semester study for its Fields Program and its Directed Independent Language Study (DILS) Program. The deadline for applying to either program for fall semester study is March 1. The Directed Independent Language Study (DILS) Program gives students the opportunity to study a language that is not currently taught in a Yale classroom; the Fields Program gives students the opportunity to pursue advanced-level language study within the context of their academic area of focus (generally in areas other literature if the language is taught at Yale, since advanced coursework in literature would likely be available).

Both are non-credit programs, open to all registered Yale students. In each program, students work with a Language Partner—a native speaker of the target language (not a formal instructor)—in two 1-hour sessions for 12 weeks. The sessions aim to develop linguistic and cultural competence through active conversation and practice of what you are studying independently. With a limited number of slots available, a selection committee reviews all applications for their merit and appropriateness, and notifies students of its decisions within four to six weeks after the application deadline.

Details on each program and how to apply can be found at these links:

Directed Independent Language Study (DILS):

Fields Program:

Please note that all applications must be received by the application deadline (this includes applications for continued study from current DILS or Fields students).

CHUN CHALLENGE FOR CHANGE

The Yale College Dean’s Office, in partnership with the Tsai Center for Innovative Thinking, is offering a $500 prize to students who propose innovative approaches to improving life at Yale. Proposals can address:

  • Environmental issues – climate change, sustainability, food waste, Yale’s energy efficiency
  • Student wellness – mental, emotional, physical, social or professional health
  • Belonging at Yale – diversity, equity and inclusion on campus
  • Any other solutions to problems that you think our community can address

Proposals are judged for being innovative and interdisciplinary, and for their impact on addressing a problem at Yale. The winning team will get $500 plus dinner with Dean Chun.

Teams must include a minimum of two Yale College students from the same residential college and must include students from two or more different majors. Teams from each college will be selected and notified by March 18th. Teams must present their ideas in under three minutes to a panel of judges, which will include Dean Chun, on April 3rd, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Teams will get support from Tsai CITY staff to practice their presentations.
