Notes and News – Week of 2/11/2019

HL’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

We are still in 2nd place in the Tyng Cup standings!!!  Our “photo of the week” shows our wonderful TD swim team on their strong showing!  Our IM secretaries, Max Yuhas and Angel Mora, want to give a shout out to Michael Najem ’20 (first on the right) and Virginia Davis ’22 (third from the left) for anchoring our team!

I have already mentioned the TD summer fellowships – Bergin, Chubb, and Richter – administered by TD.   I now want to call your attention to two more fellowships created in the memory of past TD students – Chase Coggins Memorial Scholarship Fund named after Chase Frederick Coggins TD ’79 and the Michael Manzella Foundation Fellowship named after Michael Manzella TD ’93.

Chase Coggins was a member of the heavyweight crew team and Glee Club with a passion for the study of the American West.  The fellowship ($2000-$4000) funds “wilderness exploration with philosophical, artistic or scientific intent” or “traveling to rural areas of developing countries to document and study those regions from a variety of perspectives” and disciplines.  Applications are due March 1st . Click here to go to the site.

Michael Manzella was an accomplished musician and composer who also devoted his time working with children suffering from life-threatening illness, often in underserved communities.  The summer fellowship ($3000-$5000) supports projects in the areas of cancer research, music and the performing arts, education and youth development.  Applications are due on March 15th.  Click here to go to the site.

This is “Sustainability Week” in TD and you will be receiving emails describing different special activities throughout the week to help make our college more energy efficient and less wasteful.  Here is a list of planned activities from the Sustainability Service Corps:

  • Monday, February 11: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Kite

Erica McAlpine

It’s hard to say a word these days

without suggesting the opposite, too,

as though life itself might also be

a metaphor for life, in which no matter

what you see, it isn’t really true.

I saw a kite – the bird – above

me in the park one big and windy

afternoon in New York in the summertime

just gliding on the air (and how I loved

him there!) until a gust of autumn came

and jerked him sideways on the wing

so that I saw that what I saw

had not been bird at all, but feathers,

glue, and string. Let me tell it

to you straight, tell you exactly what

I mean: if a man can make so well

a copy of a bird that only wind can prove

its form, then art’s duplicity’s

the same. The realer it is, the better.

AAU CAMPUS SEXUAL CLIMATE SURVEY

February 4 – March 4, 2019

If you are a Yale student—graduate, undergraduate, or professional—you should have received an invitation in your email from President Salovey asking you to take part in the 2019 Campus Sexual Climate Survey. This confidential survey asks about students’ perceptions and experiences of sexual misconduct, campus resources and support, and bystander intervention. The results will help guide Yale’s strategies for addressing sexual misconduct. The strength of those findings, though, will depend on you! Please, check your inbox and fill out the survey now. (The links are unique, so use only your own email invitation.) Yale will report on the results in Fall 2019. For more details about the survey and Yale’s resources, please see smr.yale.edu. For information, advocacy, and support, contact SHARE (203-432-2000) at any time.

SUMMER INSTITUTE IN BIOETHICS
The 14th annual Summer Institute in Bioethics, offered by Yale’s Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics, will take place from June 10 - July 27, 2019. This 7-week program is for graduate students, professional students, and select undergrads.  We also offer a four-day program called “Foundations of Bioethics” that gives a comprehensive overview of the field and its history. Our programs are known for our engaging and approachable faculty, an enthusiastic alumni network, and opportunities to network with faculty and participants from all over the globe.

The full 7-week program provides up to 200 contact hours. Each day starts with an engaging lecture on bioethics that varies from “Ethical Implications of Vaping” to “Ethics of Lethal Autonomous Weapons.”  In the afternoon, students attend seminars led by our esteemed faculty and visiting scholars from across the globe. Seminar topics include the ethics of time travel, clinical ethics, medical humanities in Spanish, bioethics and the law, animal ethics, data ethics, neuroethics, research ethics, and so much more. Please click here for the descriptions of all our various seminars.

At the end of the program, all students present a poster at Yale School of Medicine, and some students work 1:1 with faculty to write an academic publication during the program. The summer institute can serve as the launching ground to a rewarding career in bioethics. Several students from our 2017 class recently presented their work at Oxford, and many of our 20015-2018 students just presented their work at UNESCO’s annual bioethics conference.

Scholarships for Yale students are still available!   Visit our website to learn more, or email us at bioethics@yale.edu.
