Notes and News – Week of 4/23/2018

HL’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

The sun has finally come out for our last week of classes.  I hope the warmth and sunshine has helped to make this day less gloomy for all!  As I said in my earlier email, Chief Higgins and the YPD are working to increase security in and around the college and I will be sending out an update to the TD community later today.

This is the last week of classes and many of our college activities will start to close down for the semester.  But mark your calendars for our annual end-of-the-year TD Day Celebration for this Friday 4/27!  Please note that this Thursday is the last day of the Buttery!  Before we shut down for the year, I want to take a moment to thank the joint Buttery and Mott Woolley Council for putting on a great “Silver Dollar Pancakes” event celebrating our TD first-years’ second place finish at this year’s First-Year Olympics!!!  Please note that this is our last week for the Buttery as our amazing staff has to close up shop and start turning their attention to final papers and exams.  Tonight they will do one last special event to launch the Yale Refugee Project’s “Snactivism” venture featuring food made by local refugee families.  So tonight, please come down to sample baklava, falafel, and cheese pastries.

While we’ll all miss the Buttery, please don’t despair!  As always, we will have a great list of study breaks to keep everyone fueled and energized for the night.  Starting on Sunday 4/29, the TD dining hall will stay open for 24 hour studying.  Be on the look out for our list of planned study breaks for Reading Week.

Lastly, as we begin to close out the spring semester, the TD staff and aides will be preparing the multi-purpose room for summer storage.  As usual, we will allow each TD student to store up to 5 boxes for the summer.  However, I must inform all of you that we must now charge $10/box as that is the price that has been set for all 14 colleges across the campus.  The price change was decided last year by the Council of the Heads of College but the Council delayed the implementation until this spring.  We will send out the closing of the college email before the end of the week.

Speaking of spring, our “photo of the week” is from TD outreach aide Nikita Raheja ‘20 who took a group of TD students to the Wooster Square Cherry Blossom Festival this Saturday.  Although the blossoms weren’t quite in full bloom, everyone enjoyed the many vendors and festive atmosphere!

Here are some important events for the rest of the semester:

Friday 4/27 TD Day (TD Courtyard)

Bounce away the stress and enjoy the wonderful feast brought by our TD Dining Hall staff.  We are bringing the Guacamole Bar for the big celebration!!!  The fun begins once the inflatables are done and the music begins!

Tuesday 5/1 8:30pm TD Orchestra Spring Concert (TD Dining Hall)

Come hear the final performance of the Timothy Dwight Community Chamber Orchestra!  We’ll be performing a program of Debussy, Sibelius, and Coleridge-Taylor.  A light reception will follow in the Thompson Room.

Wednesday 5/2 5-7:30pm Farewell Dinner to the Bajwa Family (TD Dining Hall)

We will celebrate the wonderful Bajwa Family who have been beloved resident fellows of the TD community.  By special request, our Dining Hall staff will be doing a special chicken tenders dinner and a sundae bar.  Family dinner protocol will be in effect so please make sure to have your TD sticker!  We also welcome past and current guests from the Bajwas’ Halal dinners.

Thursday 5/3 5:30pm Senior Cocktail Hour (TD House) and Senior Dinner (TD Dining Hall)

Come celebrate the end of the semester and a wonderful four years as you head towards graduation!  We start with a fun – but brief – cocktail hour in the TD house.  Break for the TD senior class photo in the courtyard – fingers crossed for sunshine!  And then go to the TD Dining Hall for a wonderful senior dinner.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Áshe,

HL
