Notes and News – Week of 4/16/2018
HL’s Pieces
Dear Red Lions,
First, congratulations to our TD SAC for putting together a wonderful spring formal in our beautiful dining hall! In particular, kudos to SAC officers and TD first-years Ryan Tsedevsuren and Sarah Cameron and TD sophomores Valentina Connell and Juan Otoya Vanini for leading the decorating charge and helping make the evening a success! We are also grateful to the hard work of our TD Dining Hall staff in providing the tasty food, punch, and beer!
Congratulations to our first-years for finishing in second place at this year’s First-Year Olympics!!! Captains Angel Mora and Lizzie Dolan did a fabulous job designing the t-shirts and pulling together spirited teams for each competition. Although I missed it because of a conference in Sacramento, I received many updates throughout the day and great pictures. I also heard reports that Kahlil Greene was an emcee extraordinaire!!! Here our two great photos from Angel featuring Team Aphrodite and our rap battle champion, Roger Guo!!!
Speaking of competition, here is our “photo of the week” featuring TD junior Kees Schipper and first-year Jack Arnold, members of the Bulldogs men’s soccer team with our eleven-year-old, Octavio! The team did a great community outreach event hosting a soccer clinic for New Haven Youth Soccer’s travel teams. The kids all ranging in ages from 10-12 had a great time and really loved playing on the big stadium!
Here are some important events for this week:

In Memoriam Mae Noblitt
A.R. Ammons
This is just a place:
we go around, distanced,
yearly in a star’s
atmosphere, turning
daily into and out of
direct light and
slanting through the
quadrant seasons: deep
space begins at our
heels, nearly rousing
us loose: we look up
or out so high, sight’s
silk almost draws us away:
this is just a place:
currents worry themselves
coiled and free in airs
and oceans: water picks
up mineral shadow and
plasm into billions of
designs, frames: trees,
grains, bacteria: but
is love a reality we
made here ourselves–
and grief–did we design
that–or do these,
like currents, whine
in and out among us merely
as we arrive and go:
this is just a place:
the reality we agree with,
that agrees with us,
outbounding this, arrives
to touch, joining with
us from far away:
our home which defines
us is elsewhere but not
so far away we have
forgotten it:
this is just a place.

FRESH CHECK DAY Yale’s undergraduate mental health awareness and advocacy group. We are writing to you to share a groundbreaking event on April 20th from 12pm to 3pm on Cross Campus: Fresh Check Day at Yale. Fresh Check Day is the central piece of programming of the Jordan Porco Foundation (JPF), a suicide prevention foundation.
Fresh Check Day is a celebratory, fair-like event that includes peer-run interactive expo booths on a range of topics from substance abuse to suicide prevention, free food, music, and prizes to engage students in discussion about their mental health and suicide prevention in an approachable manner. With this event, Mind Matters hopes to create a positive atmosphere for open dialogue on mental health and mental illness, educate the Yale community on the vast array of mental health resources available to them on campus, and spread awareness of mental illness. |
