Notes and News – Week of 3-7

ML’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

We have a very quiet week as we make our way to spring break.  Please do get some good rest because we are going to jump right into some very exciting events when we return.

Aside from Paul Simon and Shawn Levy coming to Yale – !!!! – we have one more terrific event happening after the break.  Sarah Parcak TD ’01 will be coming to campus and returning to TD.  Some of you may know her as the “space archaeologist” or the “modern day Indiana Jones” as dubbed by the media. She is this year’s winner of the TED $1 million challenge award for her work using satellite imaging to track down lost civilizations.  You can see her on a recent episode of the Late Show with Steven Colbert or watch her short TED talk.  She will be on campus to give a lecture at the Whitney Humanities Center on 4/6.  On Thursday 4/7 at 4:30pm, she will be doing a master’s tea in TD to talk about her career trajectory going from a Yale Egyptology student to world renowned archaeologist.  She’ll also talk about her experiences at this year’s TED conference and the importance of public communication for academic scholars today.

Speaking of scholarly work… senior essay due dates are just around the corner. Senior lions, it is not too late to make good use of the services of our wonderful writing tutor, Diane Charney.  She has helped many seniors turn working drafts into beautifully crafted and award-winning essays.  You should feel free to email her at diane.charney@yale.edu to set up an appointment now.  Don’t wait until you return from break when there will no doubt be a rush of seniors breaking down her door for help.

This week’s “photo of the week” comes from TD junior John Chirikjian and captures last Friday’s great Junior Class “Spring Sing” in the TD Dining Hall that featured karaoke and Pepe’s Pizza.  The evening had great community energy and pulled many junior lions to the stage to sing with friends and suitemates.  Pictured are Derek Ficenec, Adam Mahler, Mev Ikiz, and Jordan Plotner masterfully singing Enrique Iglesias’s “Bailando”!  Many thanks to the hard-working event co-chairs, Nick Kelly and Audrey deVaughn, and their crew of dedicated juniors: Kate Berry, Hanna Mandl, John Chirikjian, Seungju Hwang, Derek Ficenec, Charlie Proctor, Lukas Noritzsch, and Raúl Monraz.

Here are the great TD events happening the first 2 weeks after break…

Tuesday 3/29 5:30pm Reception for Shawn Levy TD ’89 (TD House)

Yale’s Film and Media Studies program will be presenting its annual award to Shawn Levy for his work.  Most known for the “Night at the Museum” movies, his work includes the “Pink Panther” movies, “Real Steel,” and “Cheaper by the Dozen”.  Sign up here if you would like to enter the lottery to attend the award reception in the TD House.  This should be a very fun night that will include faculty and administrators from the Film and Media Studies program and the Peabody Museum.  We have room for 30 TD students to attend.  A screening of the first “Night at the Museum” movie will take place next door in the Whitney Humanities Center auditorium at 7pm.

Friday 4/1 5-9pm TD Pop Up Restaurant (Buttery)

Join our TD top chef, sophomore Sem Kroon, as he and the Buttery crew create a three-course fine dining experience.  The menu will include an appetizer course of chilled gazpacho, a main course of ribeye of beef or linguine wih mushroom and grana padano, and close with a dessert course of made to order crepes.  Reservations are required and the cost will be $5/person.  Please go to this link to reserve a table for four or a seat at the “wildcard” table to meet up with other TDers for either the 5pm or 7pm seating.

Tuesday 4/5 4:30pm A Conversation with Chubb Fellow Paul Simon (Battell)

It goes without saying that this will be the highlight event in April!  If you have not already reserved your ticket, go to this link.  Take advantage of this advanced ticket window while you can.  General ticketing for the rest of the university and beyond will start on Wednesday at 9am

Thursday 4/7 4:30pm Master’s Tea with Sarah Parcak TD ‘01 (TD House)

Meet space archaeologist Sarah Parcak as she discusses her fascinating career!  What started with Llamaland took her to Yale’s Egyptology program and eventually landed her the $1 million TED award.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

From Yusef Komunyakaa’s incandescent poem “Kindness”:

…A barometer, temperature
gauge, a ruler in minus fractions
& pedigrees, a thingmajig,
a probe with an all-seeing eye,
what do we need to measure
kindness, every unheld breath,
every unkind leapyear?
sometimes a sober voice is enough
to calm the waters & drive away
the false witnesses, saying, Look,
here are the broken treaties Beauty
brought us to earthbound sentinels.
