TIMOTHY DWIGHT NOTES & NEWS

WEEK OF 2/26/2024

HL’S PIECES

Dear Red Lions,

I hope many of you enjoyed last week’s celebrations of the new Year of the Dragon in andout of TD!

Our “photo of the week” comes from FaFa Van Ha, Lazarus Fellow in Food & Agriculture, who has been a wonderful partner along with the Yale Sustainable Food Program.  This semester they brought us two fabulous teas with Lauren Tran and Irene Li.  Here is a photo with Irene Li coaching Sophomore Lion and Buttery staffer, Helena Vargas, on the fine art of hand pulling noodles.
Irene worked with the Buttery staff to bring to life her “zero-waste” cooking concepts featured in her latest cookbook.  Aside from the noodles, the group worked on developing new sauces and toppings found in the Buttery pantry and refrigerator.

I am also grateful to First-Year Lion, Coby Barrow, who sent in this photo capturing the lion dance troupe performing at last Saturday’s Lunarfest on Whitney Avenue.  This annual event was sponsored by the Yale-China Association
Speaking of photographs… congratulations to Junior Lion Alex Yu on his CPA-funded photography exhibit, “Sprezzatura: Classice Streetwar from the 60s to Present,” in the TD gallery!

And last but not least… Senior Lions… do not forget to order your caps and gowns for graduation.  The university sent out a note last week but I wanted to make sure you all have the link!!!

Here are some important dates and events for this week and next:

Tuesday 2/28 TD Senior Mellon Forum (TD House)

TD Mellon Forum has been going strong!  For this week, we are excited to cheer on this week’s senior lions presenting their capstone projects: Daniel Blokh, Ella Mainwaring Foster, and Joaquin Carceres Melgarejo!

Wednesday 2/29 Dinner Service TD Black History Month Dinner (TD Dining Hall)

Our amazing TD Dining Hall staff is once again sharing their beloved family recipes with us in this special annual dinner.  Expect a delicious menu of family recipes from our TD culinary team of Wanda Underwood, Alisa Underwood, Pam Davis, and Crystal Coleman!

Saturday 3/2 2-5pm TD Trip to Urban Air Adventure & Trampoline Park

Mott is hosting a trip to the Urban Air Trampoline Park in Orange, CT. The indoor park hosts all kinds of activities, including trampolines, a climbing hill, trapeze, and battle beam. A bus will leave for the park at 2:00 pm, and return to the TD Gate by 5:00pm. The trip is fully subsidized by TD. If demand for the trip exceeds capacity, then there will be a random lottery next week for those who have signed up.

Tuesday 3/5 12:30-1:15pm Yale and Slavery discussion (TD Thompson Room)

We heard from several students that our original time slots for the Yale and Slavery discussion session conflicted with class schedules.  Dean Mahurin and I have made a slight change.  We will be meeting next Tuesday 3/5 from 12:30 to 1:15pm in the TD Thompson Room – the dining room next to the Dining Hall.  Please sign up here if you would like to attend.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Àshe,
HL

Considering the Snail
Thom Gunn

The snail pushes through a green
night, for the grass is heavy
with water and meets over
the bright path he makes, where rain
has darkened the earth’s dark. He
moves in a wood of desire,

pale antlers barely stirring
as he hunts. I cannot tell
what power is at work, drenched there
with purpose, knowing nothing.
What is a snail’s fury? All
I think is that if later

I parted the blades above
the tunnel and saw the thin
trail of broken white across
litter, I would never have
imagined the slow passion
to that deliberate progress.
