9-29-14:  TD Notes & News

Master’s Pieces

The moon is waxing, TD, in case you haven’t been keeping track, and so are our standings in the Tyng Cup!!!  The freshmen and sophomore classes are KILLING it on both participation and victories. As of the last scores entered, TD was out in front by 251 to 175 for J(ust)E(xit). Shout-out to Associate Master Sally Brenzel today for driving and leading an intrepid, non-forfeiting TD golf foursome to the course. Meanwhile, I’m putting on my silk shorts and running for cross-country glory on Wednesday. The rest of the TD runners will take a serious shot at first place, while I do some clowning to distract the competition. This is how bad I want the Tyng, me buckos. Come out and join us or cheer us on.

Only one event on the TD docket this week, but it’s a big one:

·         Sunday, October 5: Academy Sinfonietta concert at 9 pm in the TD Dining Hall   Our own Kevin Sherwin ’16 has organized a chamber orchestra, and he will conduct its first performance this coming Sunday night. The program features J.S.Bach’s Cantata #4, Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Violins in A Minor, and C.P.E. Bach’s Symphony in D Major. Yes, you want to hear this. And yes, you will never be anyplace for the rest of your life where musicians of this quality come to your home to play for you. (Well, most of you anyway.) And yes, it’s free.

Community Citizenship Requests: There was an improvement regarding late night courtyard noise this past week, but as we enter the land of midterms, please special take care to observe quiet hours after 11 from S-Th. We’re not doing as well, unfortunately, with the tableware. Please bring all plates and cups and silverware back to the DH. Maybe your citizen contribution this week will be to do this on your entire suite’s behalf?

Dean’s Domain

As we bask in what are probably the final warm days of the year, my mind turns to EB White’s essay “Once More to the Lake,” and its meditation on the end of summer (and, too, the end of childhood – but that’s another matter, for another Dean’s Domain).

“Summertime, oh summertime, pattern of life indelible, the fadeproof lake, the woods unshatterable, the pasture with the sweet fern and the juniper forever and ever, summer without end; this was the background, and life along the shore was the design, the cottages with their innocent and tranquil design, their tiny docks with the flagpole and the American flag floating against the white clouds in the blue sky, the little paths over the roots of the trees leading from camp to camp and the paths leading back to the outhouses and the can of lime for sprinkling, and at the souvenir counters at the store the miniature birch-bark canoes and the postcards that showed things looking a little better than they looked.  This was the American family at play, escaping the city heat, wondering whether the newcomers at the camp at the head of the cove were ‘common,’ or ‘nice,’ wondering whether it was true that the people who drove up for Sunday dinner at the farmhouse were turned away because there wasn’t enough chicken.

It seemed to me, as I kept remembering all this, that those times and those summers had been infinitely precious and worth saving.  There had been jollity and peace and goodness.”

To jollity and peace and goodness, TD!
