9-22-14:  TD Notes & News

Master’s Pieces

Bon soir, mes amis. I have no reflections about the current weather this evening. It just is what it is. My forecast? Increasing dark, then lighter some time well before you wake up, with a return to darkness later that same day. The real excitement is going to take place in your hearts, minds and around the courtyard of Timothy Dwight College. Check it out:

·         Tuesday, September 23: Master’s Tea with Artist Leonard Everett Fisher ’49, MFA ‘50; 4:30 pm in the Master’s House   Our own Jordan Plotner ’17 introduces us to his grandfather, Yale alum Leonard Fisher, winner of the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for painting, among many other honors. Mr. Fisher drew many of the critical maps used by American forces in WWII, designed 10 U.S. Postage Stamps, has written or illustrated over 250 books (!!!) and has seen his paintings, drawings and illustrations enter a wide range of museums, galleries and collections. Search him in Google Images and then come here tomorrow and hear what he’s experienced in 70 years of making art. (Remember: great food, too!)

·         Saturday, September 27: First Ever TD Courtyard Football Tailgate!!! Starts at 10:30 am, with bus to the Bowl at 12:00 Noon   Brought to you courtesy of inspiration from your Mott Woolley Council, we’re going to try something new for the Army game and 100th anniversary of the Yale Bowl: a breakfast sandwich, omelete station, burger and dog on the grill, music blasting courtyard football tailgate. No brunch in the dining hall; we’ll be outdoors feasting from 10:30 until about 1:00 pm, with a 50-seat bus of our very own pulling up at the Temple Gate at noon to take tailgaters to the Bowl. (Anybody who misses the bus can take one of the buses leaving constantly from Payne Whitney.) Wear your TD gear. Wolf down tailgate egg and cheese sandwiches. Beat Army!

·         Sunday, September 28  Lighthouse Point Hawk Migration,  8:00 am to 1:00 pm TD shuttle service to and from the Park  We’re going to try this again! You didn’t know it when you chose Yale, but you are literally 15 minutes from one of the major raptor flyways in America. Tens of thousands of hawks, falcons, ospreys and eagles stream through a funnel at Lighthouse Point in East Haven from September through October. OM Bob Kennedy and I will run a shuttle service, with the first wave leaving at 8:30 am and the second wave at 10:30 am to and from the park so that you can spend a couple of hours with us (and a few faithful New Haven recorders) watching spectacular predators fly directly overhead. These are birds you will probably never otherwise see in the wild, and you can examine them through the Master’s 60x birding scope, plus walk around Lighthouse Point Park, a beautiful spot on the sound.

·         Monday, September 29: Master’s Tea with Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Foreign Minister, Özdil Nami – 4:30 pm in the Master’s House.  Özdil Nami took business degrees from Boğaziçi University in Turkey and The University of California, Berkeley. From 1997 to 2000 he served as Political Advisor at the TRNC Presidency Office. In January 2005, he was elected as the representative of the Turkish Cypriot Community at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). In March 2005, he was appointed as an observer member at the Socialist Group in the European Parliament. Between the years of 2008 and 2010, he served as the TRNC President’s Special Representative for the Cyprus negotiations. In 2013, he was appointed as the TRNC Minister of Foreign Affairs. He will be talking at the Tea about his view of the current negotiations and prospects for settlement of the long-running disputes between Turkish and Greek Cypriots over the division of the island.

IM Update: Omg, part deux. As of this morning we were again alone at #1, with 185 points to Saywhat’s 135 and J(cr)E(w)’s 132. The Lions are killing it, as nature intended. Every experienced Tyng observer knows, however, that no lead in the Tyng is EVER ENOUGH. Be hungry! Run with the pride!! Bring back meat to the fire!!!

Community Citizenship Requests: We have three things to think about regarding our lives together: 1) Please observe quiet hours after 11 from S-Th, especially with regard to roaring in the courtyard; 2) Please do NOT use your bathroom waste baskets for unloading your room trash; get a little exercise for a change and hump it down to the lower level waste areas per community protocol; 3) Please bring plates and cups back to the DH – we are dangerously low, especially because of cups now distributed around the college common rooms, desks and bathroom sinks.

DEAN’s DOMAIN

In honor of Pig’s 5-month birthday today (which is also Matt’s 36th birthday!), I offer this poem from Donald Justice:

A Birthday Candle

Thirty today, I saw
The trees flare briefly like
The candles on a cake,
As the sun went down the sky,
A momentary flash,
Yet there was time to wish

There’s almost always “time to wish,” guys – whether it’s your birthday or not.
