10-6-14:  TD Notes & News

Master’s Pieces

Hail, gladiators! Another good week on the IM front. Apparently, complacency is the only enemy we need to fear. Think about joining in the delirium of victory and come out to play or cheer your TD teams on to glory. Along with the crispness in the air and the tremendous energy of the team captains and IM Secretaries, some of the other students working on your behalf have planned a couple of foodie events this week:

·         Tuesday, October 7: Opening night for the Virtual Buttery!!!  10 pm   Here’s the news straight from Kelly Wu, Buttmaster to the Stars: “BABY WE GOT/AND ARE NOW BACK!!!! To the dearest denizens of the TD Basement, your favorite late night establishment is back with our best half a**ed effort to create a butt during these hard times of reconstruction. This Tuesday’s virtual buttery is brought to you by Ivy Noodle. It will be $2/plate (BUTT BUCKS ACCEPTED!!!) and you can come back for seconds once everyone gets a plate. We open at 10 and will keep going until our noodles disappear or we do. Come meet Yale University’s hottest and most talented buttery staff. Eat, drink and think about the good buttery times that are soon to come. We’ll be doing up the Virtual Buttery every Tuesday night until paradise is restored.”

·         Thursday, October 9: TD SAC study break with Insomnia Cookies – 10 pm in the Thompson Room   Sun setting earlier = moving into October = midterms rising = late nights increasing = hunger growing = TD SAC thinking of you = food = love. Your TD SAC is keeping pace with your life. Head to the Thompson Room on Thursday night for a just-in-time Insomnia Cookies study break “celebrating” midterm season.

·         Saturday, October 11: Family Weekend Reception in the Master’s House at 4:30 pm  If you have folks coming into town, bring them by. I don’t bite. And if you don’t have folks coming to see you, feel free to stop by anyway.

·         Sunday, October 12, 1:30 - 3:00 pm in the Master’s House, Steve Blum ’74 for “Financial Life After Yale.” In the last year and a half, Steve Blum’s sessions have reached more than 1,400 Yalies with essential information about budgeting, saving, investing, taxes and the basic financial road rules you will soon encounter out there in the (shiver) real worldOr even right here in the bubble. To register, RSVP to stephen.blum@yale.edu and complete a one-minute survey athttps://www.surveymonkey.com/s/TDFLAYPreOct2014

Dean’s Domain

Today I offer not one but two quotations from Malcolm X’s autobiography, which you may apply as you see fit during midterm season.

First: “The main thing you got to remember is that everything in the world is a hustle.”

And second: “I don’t think anybody ever got so much out of going to prison than I did. In fact, prison enabled me to study far more intensively than I would have if my life had gone differently and I had attended some college.  I imagine that one of the biggest trouble with colleges is there are too many distractions, too much panty-raiding, fraternities, and boola-boola and all that.”

To resisting distractions.  (You can keep some of the boola-boola, I guess.)

The SHARE (Sexual Harassment and Assault Response & Education) Center will be offering support groups during the fall semester (Dates and times to be set based on schedules of members)

Where: SHARE Center (Yale Health, Lower Level)

When: Weekly

Number of Sessions: 6

Length of Sessions: 75 minutes

Please contact Carole Goldberg (Director), Jennifer Czincz (Assistant Director), or Amy Myers (Program Associate) if you are interested in participating in a group or for more information:

The Special Academic Program in Human Rights, beginning this fall, offers the opportunity to explore human rights from an interdisciplinary perspective and to acquire the analytical and practical skills necessary for human rights study and related careers. The Program connects students to faculty and peers with similar interests, supports research projects and internship opportunities, and offers career guidance. The Program consists of 6 courses - a gateway course, four electives, and a capstone course - and is to be completed in addition to one’s major.

The application is due November 7, 2014, and all currently enrolled members of the Class of 2017 (sophomores) are eligible to apply; there are no prerequisite courses. To learn more about the Program and access the application, visit http://humanrights.yale.edu/apply. Please email humanrights.program@yale.edu with any questions about the Program; an information session will also be held in early October.
