10-27-14:  TD Notes & News  –

****NOTE BELOW THE POSTPONEMENT OF THE JAY CARNEY TEA:  Originally scheduled for this Wednesday and now postponed to Monday, November 10!!***

Master’s Pieces

Evening, me hearties. Welcome back to show time, and whatever mix of midterm marks you are celebrating, meditating or looking to transcend. Strangely and unbelievably enough, the pace now quickens, I suppose because the Thanksgiving break starts in 25 days. We’ll make it, you and I and 837 ever aspiring student organizations, or whatever number it is these days. What’s important is a sense of humor, a sense of balance and compassion for all. Plus some good spirits and good times here in your home courtyard:

·         Tonight! Monday, October 27 at 10 pm in the Thompson Room: SAC-sponsored Popeye’s Study Break   Your SAC stalwarts knew you’d be hungry coming off break, and are serving up the ultimate comfort food to launch Fall 2014, part 2.

·         Tuesday, October 28, Master’s Tea at 4:30 pm with Parmesh Shahani, Yale World Fellow  Parmesh is the head of the Godrej India Culture Lab - an experimental idea-space that cross–pollinates the best ideas and people working on India across the academic, creative and corporate worlds to explore what it means to be modern and Indian. In addition, he also serves as the Editor-at-large for Vervemagazine, India. Parmesh is a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, TED Fellow, and a Utrecht University-Impakt Fellow. (Check out Verve at http://www.vervemagazine.in/)  His topic will be “Love and (Be)Longing in Contemporary India.”

·         Tuesday, October 28   Virtual Buttery  10 pm  Another dedicated group, your insufficiently-employed and chomping-at-the-bit Buttery Crew, wants to see you tomorrow night, and the rumor is they’re bringing in some Indian food from Zaroka. Be down below with bright eyes and $2 in hand.

·         Thursday, October 30, at 4 pm: All Classes Pumpkin Carving Fiesta in the Upper Courtyard   We’re loading up with 75 pumpkins on Thursday morning, enough for everybody to get involved. Carving kits, pumpkin patterns, freehand artistry, pumpkin guts, candlelights and so much more. Should be quite a courtyard scene when we’re done. (Also note that the Peabody Museum is hosting a Haunted Hall Ball inside the museum from 7-10 pm this night, with refreshments and cocktails for the students of age – tickets are $15 online at http://peabody.yale.edu/events/haunted-hall-crawl-costume-ball.)

·         Friday, October 31, at 6:00 pm: Annual TD Halloween Costume Judging in the Dining Hall  You know how this works. You take your best shot, you announce your costume, you stand on the chair, everyone cheers and then the judges make those incredibly difficult and creative decisions on the awards. Easy to sign up: just BE IN THE DINING HALL at a few minutes before 6 pm to put your name on the contest list and be prepared to “activate” your outfit when the time comes. Almost anything goes, as long as you remember that Princess Aya and Scary Jacub will be joining us competing in the junior division. (And then….. the sold-out YSO Halloween Show at midnight in Woolsey.)

Down the Road – Mark Your Calendar

Sunday, November 2 at 2 am, set your clocks BACK for an hour of free snoozing before brunch on Sunday morning.

November 7, 10 pm – TD Freshman Screw; this year’s theme: Credit-D-Fail – when you care enough to show up but not to dress up.

Community Stuff – Recording Studio call for Demo’s!!!

Reminder to submit demo recordings for the TD CD by 5 pm this Wednesday, Oct. 29!! From Eun Sung Yang, head engineer: “Dearest TD family, after observing your awesome talents during community night, the TD Recording Studio has decided to create the first ever TD CD to showcase our wonderful musicians. Shoot us a demo recording of what you would like to record, individually or as a group. We’ll arrange a studio recording session with you, mix and master your music, and include you on our glorious CD. Send submissions or questions to robert.kennedy@yale.edu and eunsung.yang@yale.edu.”

Dean’s Domain

Did you know that the great modernist Wallace Stevens wrote a very long, very famous poem on the city you currently inhabit?

From “An Ordinary Evening in New Haven”:

The mobile and immobile flickering
In the area between is and was are leaves,
Leaves burnished in autumnal burnished trees

And leaves in whirlings in the gutters, whirlings
Around and away, resembiling the presence of thought
Resembling the presences of thoughts, as if,

In the end, in the whole psychology, the self,
the town, the weather, in a casual litter,
Together, said words of the world are the life of the world.

Walden Peer Counseling: Walden is a group of undergraduates dedicated to offering empathy and support in a non-judgmental space. They are there to listen, explore feelings, work through problems, or just talk. Walden is happy to discuss all types of issues, big and small: whether you are going through a major hardship or just having a bad day, they are always happy to listen and help you sort through it. You can stay for as long as you want or as little as you want; it’s completely your choice. Their phone line operates from 8pm to 8am every night. The number is (203) 432-TALK (203-432-8255). Their office, located in the basement of Welch B on old campus (which all undergraduates have swipe access to), is open for walk-ins from 8pm to 1am every night.

SHARE Support Groups. The SHARE Center will be offering sexual assault support groups for students this fall. Support groups offer a valuable space to share concerns, strategies, and support. Most survivors say they find support groups to be a helpful way to connect with others around an experience that can often feel isolating and confusing. The SHARE (Sexual Harassment and Assault Response & Education) Center will be offering support groups during the fall semester (Dates and times to be set based on schedules of members). SHARE Center (Yale Health, Lower Level). Weekly Sessions (6), length: 75 minutes. Please contact Carole Goldberg (Director), Jennifer Czincz (Assistant Director), or Amy Myers (Program Associate) if you are interested in participating in a group or for more information: Carole Goldberg, Psy.D. - carole.goldberg@yale.edu - 203 432 0310, Jennifer Czincz, Ph.D. – jennifer.czincz@yale.edu – 203-432-2610, Amy Myers, LCSW – amy.myers@yale.edu – 203-436 -8217
