10-20-14:  TD Notes & News

Master’s Pieces

Evening, destinarians. We are at the October break; what more need be said? I hope that your midterms are put to bed, and that soon even you yourself will be sleeping soundly for up to 14 hours per day. At least for a few days. Before you go unconscious, though, and despite our relaxed schedule this week, here’s some stuff you should know about:

·         Tuesday, October 21: Virtual Buttery  10 pm-?   So the Tuesday night virtual buttery is going well, as we await the buttery’s re-opening gala. Some of the dedicated crew are coming through again tomorrow night with pad thai, chicken curry, and rice from Thai Taste. Be there with $2. Thank you to the dedicated buttery crew.

·         Important!!!!!   Dining Hall Schedule over Break and TD WATER OUTAGE ON THURSDAY   For what DH’s are open for what meals, go to http://www.yale.edu/dining/options/dhschedule.html. Even more important, NOTE THAT IN ORDER TO REPAIR A LEAK and to REPLACE SOME CRITICAL VALVES, ALL THE WATER AND HEAT IN TD WILL BE SHUT OFF FOR MOST OF THE DAY ON THURSDAY. Sorry for those staying in the college, but this is a critical repair. The hot water & heat will shut down at 7:00am.  Cold water (and toilets) can be used until 8:30am, but then the cold water will also shut down. Everything – heat, hot water & cold water - should be back on line by 6:30pm at the latest. I will be sending out email reminders on this, but prepare ahead for a chilly day and a hike elsewhere to use restrooms if you are staying in the college during the break!!!!

Community Stuff

Whoever is “liberating” the red Adirondack chairs from across the street, please stop. They clash with our décor, and make the students in Silliman believe we envy them. (Seriously, please stop.)

PSA: take a real break. Maybe catch up on some z’s, talk with friends, day trip. The world will keep spinning regardless.

Dean’s Domain

In honor of Halloween, I offer the opening stanza to Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven”:

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,

Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—

While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,

As of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.

“‘Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door—

            Only this and nothing more.”

You can find the rest of this poem at http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/178713.  I do not intend it as a warning against “quaint and curious volumes,” which we all know are the cornerstone of a liberal arts education.  It may serve, however, as a warning against birds, which I find vaguely terrifying even when they aren’t possessed of speech.

Upcoming Dates and Deadlines

Walden Peer Counseling: Walden is a group of undergraduates dedicated to offering empathy and support in a non-judgmental space. They are there to listen, explore feelings, work through problems, or just talk. Walden is happy to discuss all types of issues, big and small: whether you are going through a major hardship or just having a bad day, they are always happy to listen and help you sort through it. You can stay for as long as you want or as little as you want; it’s completely your choice. Their phone line operates from 8pm to 8am every night. The number is (203) 432-TALK (203-432-8255). Their office, located in the basement of Welch B on old campus (which all undergraduates have swipe access to), is open for walk-ins from 8pm to 1am every night.

SHARE Support Groups The SHARE Center will be offering sexual assault support groups for students this fall. Support groups offer a valuable space to share concerns, strategies, and support. Most survivors say they find support groups to be a helpful way to connect with others around an experience that can often feel isolating and confusing. The SHARE (Sexual Harassment and Assault Response & Education) Center will be offering support groups during the fall semester (Dates and times to be set based on schedules of members). SHARE Center (Yale Health, Lower Level). Weekly Sessions (6), length: 75 minutes. Please contact Carole Goldberg (Director), Jennifer Czincz (Assistant Director), or Amy Myers (Program Associate) if you are interested in participating in a group or for more information: Carole Goldberg, Psy.D. - carole.goldberg@yale.edu203 432 0310, Jennifer Czincz, Ph.D. – jennifer.czincz@yale.edu – 203-432-2610, Amy Myers, LCSW – amy.myers@yale.edu– 203-436 -8217
