10-13-14:  TD Notes & News

Master’s Pieces

Yo yo yo. Weather cools down; action heats up. Midterms may be kicking in our doors, but TD IM’s are still rocking the world at #1, which is the only # we recognize. Check out the fun ahead for this week, starting with wings for your soul and moving on to food for your mind, tickling for your ribs and paintball for your warrior spirit:

·         Tuesday, October 14: Virtual Buttery!!!  10 pm-?   Last week was a hit, so Kelly Wu and the buttery magicians are moving forward with a regular Tuesday night gig. It will still be $2/plate (BUTT BUCKS ACCEPTED!!!) and this week it’s WINGS NIGHT. You know you want them.

·         Wednesday, October 15: 4:30 pm Master’s Tea with Dalia Mogahed   Visiting Yale as the featured speaker for the annual Eid Banquet, Dalia Mogahed will come over to TD for a Tea in the Master’s House on Wednesday. She is the Director of Research at the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding and the former Executive Director of the Gallup Center for Muslim Studies.  With Prof. John Esposito, she coauthored the groundbreaking book Who Speaks for Islam?  What a Billion Muslims Really Think.  President Barack Obama appointed Mogahed to the President’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships in 2009.  Her analysis has appeared in theWall Street JournalForeign Policy, the Harvard International Review, and the Middle East Policy Journal.

·         Thursday, October 16: SAC and Big Sibs host TD MOVIE NIGHT – 9 pm in the Dining Hall. Come one, come all, come Little Sibs. After a showing of Daniel Matyas’s 5-minute original short film, your TD SAC and the Big Sibs will screen Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, accompanied with hot pizza. Joe Morgenstern of the WSJ says: “May be brash, unbridled, even unhinged, but its cornpone humor is rich in parody, and the craftsmanship is superb – smart writing, shrewd direction, precisely calibrated performances, inventive language, inspired silliness and all-but-flawless timing.” Sounds like an average Sunday afternoon in the TD courtyard. (Come see it on our new giant screen!)

·         Saturday, October 18, 11:30 – Mott Woolley Council Paintball Outing   As announced by email over the weekend, TD paintball is back for this coming Saturday. By the time you read this, all the places may be gone, but you can check by contacting Mev Ikiz at mevlut.ikiz@yale.edu. Eat before you board the bus at 11:30, and then $10 is all you pay, transport and paintball fee included. Bus comes back to TD by 5 pm.

Community Stuff

TD Recording Studio calls for your music to make a TD CD!!  Submit your demo takes by 5pm, Wednesday, October 29   From Eun Sung Yang, head engineer: “Dearest TD family, after observing your awesome talents, the TD Recording Studio has decided to create the first ever TD CD to showcase our wonderful musicians. We’ll arrange a studio recording session with you, mix and master your music, and include you on our glorious CD. Send submissions or questions to robert.kennedy@yale.edu and eunsung.yang@yale.edu.

TD Sustainability Service Corps: Watch for an email letting you know that in the next week or so our TD SSC’s will be coming by each room in the college, including yours!, to swap out LED’s for inefficient light bulbs and also show you some tricks for controlling your radiator heating. Fun times. Welcome these green warriors.

Juniors: Chaplaincy Fellow Opportunity in Timothy Dwight for NEXT year (2015-16). The Yale Chaplaincy Office will pick two members of the TD Class of 2017 to program events in the college that focus on questions of meaning and seek to foster spiritual wellbeing. If you want to be a Chaplaincy Fellow, the essential characteristics are maturity; curiosity about different religious traditions; ability to commit to a year-long program; and a balance of humility and charisma.  Students should be prepared to lead challenging conversations and discuss questions that have no definitive answers. Each fellow receives a $250 stipend per semester and takes a fully funded, weeklong training trip to Washington, DC during the upcoming March, 2015 spring break. Application deadline is October 25, go to http://chaplain.yale.edu/chaplaincyfellows.

Dean’s Domain

There’s a moment in Willa Cather’s second (and criminally under-read) novel, O Pioneers!, in which the protagonist Alexandra Bergson muses, “The young people, they live so hard.  And yet I sometimes envy them.”  It’s an apt descriptor of the Yale undergraduate experience: a life that’s hard even as it also seems enviable.  Keep what balance you can, and ask for help when you need it: from your suitemates, your professors, your Dean.

The STARS II program provides an intensive research experience for juniors and seniors. Beginning in the spring semester of their junior year and continuing through the senior year, STARS II scholars receive a stipend to support up to ten hours a week of laboratory research under the supervision of a faculty mentor and graduate student(s). During the intervening summer, the program provides stipend support for students to continue their research for up to eight weeks. In the spring semester of their senior year, STARS II scholars conduct a formal presentation of their research at the STARS II Symposium.  All STARS II students are also encouraged to present their research at regional and national science conferences/meetings and submit it for publication.
