11-3-14:  TD Notes & News

Master’s Pieces

Fellow destinarians, I greet you. We face an uncertain future, because such is the human condition. But right this minute we are also #1 in Yale intramurals. Speaking philosophically, I say celebrate what you can, when you can, and right now, TD rules! Which means, of course, given the traditional protocols for tribal membership and identification, YOU rule!  Àshe!

And not only that, we have some other wonderful things ahead:

·         Wednesday, November 5 at 9 pm in the Thompson Room: IT/Student Technology Collaborative sponsored Insomnia Cookie Study Break   The Student Technology Collaborative is hiring. Like technology, helping people, or getting paid to learn tech skills? Apply to work for STC! Current techs will be on hand to answer questions about their jobs over insomnia cookies and milk. For more information about the different roles and to access the application, please visit: yale.edu/stcjobs.

·         Friday, November 7, Freshman Screw at 10 pm in the TD Dining Hall  As the immortal song from Cabaret puts it, “It’s no use sitting alone in your room, come here the music play….”  Your froco will transmit the necessary lore on this event. You will figure out what to do with it, as freshman always have. TD SAC will minister the setup, the music and the vibe. Who knows what course unpredictable course love will run (or not) tonight? Meet your blind date and see what happens. This year’s theme: “Credit-D-Fail – when you care enough to show up but not to dress up.”

·         Monday, November 10 at 4:30 pm, TD Exclusive Master Tea with Jay Carney, former Press Secretary for Barack Obama  Jay, a TD alum, had to postpone his TD appearance, but now he’s going to be here next Monday. We are CLOSING THIS TEA to TD students ONLY – and we will admit any TD student who shows up. You can read about him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_Carney. After the Tea, TD will underwrite the cost for 8 TD students to have a private dinner with Jay at a nearby restaurant to be determined. To be considered for participation in the private dinner, come to the Master’s Office and sign you name to the list at the aide’s desk by noon on this Wednesda5, November 7. We’ll do a drawing from these names and notify those who will have dinner with Jay.

Down the Road – Mark Your Calendar

Wednesay, November 12, 11:45 – 1:00 pm in the Thompson Room:  Wondering what Grad school is like? Three of our TD Graduate and Professional School Affiliates will share their experience and any answer questions you may have. For this session we will be covering perspectives in: School of Management with Duncan Hinkle; Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (with a focus on Anthropology) with Christopher Hebdon; and Yale Law School with Ming-Jie Wang.

Saturday, November 15 at 10:30 am, Mott Woolley/Master’s Special Princeton Tailgate Brunch in the TD Dining Hall. Yes, just what you imagine. We’ll be holding an incredible game day brunch of berries, omelet stations, lox, croissants, etc., all with a football victory theme.

Dean’s Domain

I gave a talk tonight at the monthly TD Fellows’ event in which I quoted the African American novelist Ernest Gaines, who after receiving a prestigious writing fellowship from Stanford – and quite a lot of subsequent critical acclaim – has found himself pulled, and repulled, back to his home parish in Louisiana.  Gaines gave an interview in which he said this:

“People used to ask me, ‘Say, why do you go back to Louisiana from California?’  And I’d say, ‘I go back to Louisiana just to be.’”

I think this is a formulation worth thinking about seriously.  A lot of times, the idea of going somewhere – and particularly somewhere like Yale – is to be X, or Y.  “I’m going to Yale to be a doctor.”  “I’m going to Yale to be a professor.”  “I’m going to Yale to be a lawyer.”  It’s worth considering ending the sentence as Gaines does: going to a place, even a place like Yale, just to be.

Upcoming Deadline!

November 7 at 5:00 pm - Last day to convert from the Credit/D/Fail option in a fall-term course to a letter grade. This change can be made through SIS.

 Biology 101-104

The instructors of BIOL 101-104 for Spring 2015 are eager to be sure that there will be a section for every student who wishes to enroll, and Yale College needs your help so that they can plan properly for the required number of Teaching Fellows.

Please go to the two-question survey at http://science.yalecollege.yale.edu/biology-survey-2014 to record your plans with respect to enrollment in these courses.  Your individual response will be considered confidential and will only be used for projecting teaching needs in biology.

The Special Academic Program in Human Rights, beginning this fall, offers the opportunity to explore human rights from an interdisciplinary perspective and to acquire the analytical and practical skills necessary for human rights study and related careers. The Program connects students to faculty and peers with similar interests, supports research projects and internship opportunities, and offers career guidance. The Program consists of 6 courses - a gateway course, four electives, and a capstone course - and is to be completed in addition to one’s major. The application is due November 7, 2014, and all currently enrolled members of the Class of 2017 (sophomores) are eligible to apply; there are no prerequisite courses. To learn more about the Program and access the application, visit http://humanrights.yale.edu/apply. Please email humanrights.program@yale.edu with any questions about the Program; an information session will also be held in early October.

Chaplaincy Fellows Program, also known as the Core of 24, empowers two juniors in each college to program events for the sophomores. These events vary in nature but all focus on questions of meaning and seek to foster a sense of spiritual wellbeing. The last three cohorts of Fellows have truly been remarkable for their religious and cultural diversity, creative approaches to leadership and authentic good heartedness. Essential characteristics of students in the Core of 24 are maturity; curiosity about different religious traditions, spiritual practices, and beliefs; ability to commit to a year-long program; a tendency to listen more than speak; precocious wisdom; and a balance of humility and charisma. Students should be prepared to lead challenging conversations that include conflicting worldviews, moral convictions, and religious practices, as well as discuss questions that have no definitive answers. The position includes: (1) Training in service learning and interfaith engagement over the first week of Spring Break 2015. This includes a fully funded, weeklong trip to Washington DC. (2) Actual fellowship responsibilities within the residential colleges will commence in the fall of 2015. (3) Materials and supplies for the events in the colleges are fully and each Fellow will receive a modest stipend of 250.00 per semester. The application is now live on our website at http://chaplain.yale.edu/chaplaincyfellows. The deadline is November 5, 2014.

Walden Peer Counseling: Walden is a group of undergraduates dedicated to offering empathy and support in a non-judgmental space. They are there to listen, explore feelings, work through problems, or just talk. Walden is happy to discuss all types of issues, big and small: whether you are going through a major hardship or just having a bad day, they are always happy to listen and help you sort through it. You can stay for as long as you want or as little as you want; it’s completely your choice. Their phone line operates from 8pm to 8am every night. The number is (203) 432-TALK (203-432-8255). Their office, located in the basement of Welch B on old campus (which all undergraduates have swipe access to), is open for walk-ins from 8pm to 1am every night.

SHARE Support Groups. The SHARE Center will be offering sexual assault support groups for students this fall. Support groups offer a valuable space to share concerns, strategies, and support. Most survivors say they find support groups to be a helpful way to connect with others around an experience that can often feel isolating and confusing. The SHARE (Sexual Harassment and Assault Response & Education) Center will be offering support groups during the fall semester (Dates and times to be set based on schedules of members). SHARE Center (Yale Health, Lower Level). Weekly Sessions (6), length: 75 minutes. Please contact Carole Goldberg (Director), Jennifer Czincz (Assistant Director), or Amy Myers (Program Associate) if you are interested in participating in a group or for more information: Carole Goldberg, Psy.D. - carole.goldberg@yale.edu - 203 432 0310, Jennifer Czincz, Ph.D. – jennifer.czincz@yale.edu – 203-432-2610, Amy Myers, LCSW – amy.myers@yale.edu – 203-436 -82
