11-17-14:  TD Notes & News

Master’s Pieces

Evening, scholars and gentlepeople. I called it last Monday - the ginkgo’s letting it all go. We’ll enjoy the finishing moments tomorrow, in sunshine weather I hope. Saw a number of folks gathered around our tree on Sunday, tossing up showers of leaves as our ginkgo was showering them down. Very nice. Not only that, you’re also looking ahead to what I hope will be a wonderful and peaceful Thanksgiving week.

Here’s what I’ve got for you in the runup to the break:

·         Tuesday, November 18, 10:00 pm in the Butt Cheek – Viva Mexico!   From Kelly Wu and the Buttery Crew: “Holla holla come down to the butt Tuesday from 10 PM to midnight for some delicious tacos courtesy of Tomatillo. $2 for a plate and butt bucks are always welcome.”

·         Wednesday, November 19 – deadline of 5 pm to sign up for the Chubb Fellowship Dinner (December 1) and Alvin Ailey (December 7): Word of reminder – sign up lists are waiting in the Master’s Office for you: the FREE Chubb Fellowship dinner here in TD on December 1 at 7 pm with UN Ambassador Samantha Power and the FREE December 7 trip to NYC to see the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater perform at 7:30 pm. GET YOUR NAME ON THE LISTS BY END OF DAY WEDNESDAY. First time Chubb-goers and first time Ailey-goers will get a preference in the seat lotteries. These will be two completely memorable events.

·         Saturday, November 22 – BEAT HARVARD!!  We really mean it this time. If you want to go to The Game in Cambridge, see my email from earlier today for ticket and transportation and accommodation information. (And if a money issue is the only thing stopping you, let me know.)

Down the Road – Mark Your Calendar

·         Tuesday, November 25th at 4:30 pm   Annual Thanksgiving Dinner in the Master’s House for all TD students staying in town over Thanksgiving Break. If you’re in New Haven during Thanksgiving week, come over and join your TD sibs for our homey dinner. Every year about 40-50 students and staff get together for a stuffing. You are welcome.

·         Sunday, November 30th at 8:30 pm in the Thompson Room   Our own Emma Hathaway ’17 will be playing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto as her recital project for the term. Mark your calendar to join Emma and friends for a very nice re-entry on Sunday night to life back home here in TD.

Public Service Announcement

Got a nice note from a (rightly) concerned student about the temptation to leave food and/or dishes in the courtyard. We have some furry, four-footed residents who are liable to make unwise choices about food left lying around. Not to mention some diminutive rodents who like nothing better. Please don’t just walk away and leave food and dishes outside. I’m just sayin’.

Dean’s Domain

Several students have asked me for whom I’m rooting this weekend.  Well, because I have skin in the game – “skin” in terms of all the TD students who are on the Yale football team – I’m rooting for the Bulldogs: skin is thicker than undergraduate affiliation, as the old proverb definitely doesn’t go.

So in honor of the game, today I offer a moment from Pat Conroy’s The Prince of Tides, whose narrator, a high school football coach, observes: “Football is a game where you can’t feel lonely.”  I’d say this applies not just to those on the field, but also to those fans who collectively rally around a team and its fates.
