11-10-14:  TD Notes & News

Master’s Pieces

Evening, spacewalkers. Shout out to everyone who helped with the Master’s Tea for Jay Carney. Biggest crowd for a Tea ever - fascinating guy. I also hope that it did not escape your attention that I worked with the photographer to get our ginkgo tree in the background for the picture on the YDN front page today. I’m just sayin’. And speaking of which, the ginkgo is about to go golden on us, followed by its unique trick of dropping all its leaves into a beautiful pile pretty much in the course of a day or two. Watch for it.

We also have some other wonderful things ahead:

·         Wednesday, November 12, 11:45 – 1:00 pm in the Thompson Room: Graduate and Professional School lunch   Wondering what Grad school is like? Three of our TD Graduate and Professional School Affiliates will share their experience and any answer questions you may have. For this session we will be covering perspectives in: School of Management with Duncan Hinkle; Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (with a focus on Anthropology) with Christopher Hebdon; and Yale Law School with TD alum Ming-Jie Wang. No need to reserve, just grab your lunch and head into the Thompson Room.

·         Friday, November 14, Public Service Awards in the Master’s House at 1:45 pm  - RSVP   This Friday, we’re hosting a special gathering at my house for three Yale alums whom the Association of Yale Alumni (AYA) has named as the 2014 winners of the Yale-Jefferson Public Service Award. Dress is casual and sweets will be served.  Andrew Klaber ’04, Lean Sarna ’14 and Leanne Gilbertson ’14 will address what inspired them to extraordinary public service. (The event is limited to 30 attendees. Please RSVP to stephen.blum@yale.edu by noon this Wednesday, November 12.)

·         Saturday, November 15 at 10:30 am, Mott Woolley presents the Princeton Tailgate Brunch in the TD Dining Hall. Yes, this is exactly what you imagine. We’re combining a Master’s Brunch with the Mott Woolley tailgating tradition and rallying for Princeton with an incredible game day serving of berries, omelet stations, lox, croissants, etc., all with a football victory theme. Note the brunch starts a half hour early at 10:30 so you can fuel your walk to the buses at Payne Whitney and get to the Bowl for the kickoff at noon.

·         Monday, November 17, at 4:30 pm, Master’s Tea with Biola Alabi, Yale World Fellow   We’ll be hosting next Monday our second World Fellow, Biola Alabi of Nigeria, who will focus her talk and discussion on African careers and African women. Until recently, Biola served as Managing Director of Electronic Media Network (MNET), Africa’s first private and leading subscription television service. As Managing Director for MNET, Biola produced and air stories created by and about Africa and Africans. Based in Lagos, Nigeria, she spent four years increasing the company’s Africa portfolio, including overseeing the launch of AfricaMagic Hausa and Yoruba in 2010 and AfricaMagic Swahili in 2011: channels that have made considerable contributions to the promotion of indigenous languages and cultures. She oversaw four editions of the popular reality series Big Brother Africa, and created the Face of Africa Finale in Lagos in 2010 and the first ever Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards in 2013. Biola was listed as one of the 20 Youngest Power Women in Africa by Forbes in 2013. She previously worked with leading brands Sesame Street, Bigwords.com and Daewoo Motors.

Dean’s Domain

From Annie Proulx’s short story “A Lonely Coast” (part of the collection Close Range: Wyoming Stories): “But the water was here once.  You think about the sea that covered this place hundreds of millions of years ago, the slow evaporation, mud turned to stone.  There’s nothing calm in those thoughts.  It isn’t finished, it can still tear apart.  Nothing is finished.  You take your chances.”

Walden Peer Counseling: Walden is a group of undergraduates dedicated to offering empathy and support in a non-judgmental space. They are there to listen, explore feelings, work through problems, or just talk. Walden is happy to discuss all types of issues, big and small: whether you are going through a major hardship or just having a bad day, they are always happy to listen and help you sort through it. You can stay for as long as you want or as little as you want; it’s completely your choice. Their phone line operates from 8pm to 8am every night. The number is (203) 432-TALK (203-432-8255). Their office, located in the basement of Welch B on old campus (which all undergraduates have swipe access to), is open for walk-ins from 8pm to 1am every night.

SHARE Support Groups. The SHARE Center will be offering sexual assault support groups for students this fall. Support groups offer a valuable space to share concerns, strategies, and support. Most survivors say they find support groups to be a helpful way to connect with others around an experience that can often feel isolating and confusing. The SHARE (Sexual Harassment and Assault Response & Education) Center will be offering support groups during the fall semester (Dates and times to be set based on schedules of members). SHARE Center (Yale Health, Lower Level). Weekly Sessions (6), length: 75 minutes.
