Notes & News - Week of March 2nd, 2015

March 2, 2015

3-2-15:  TD Notes & News

Master’s Pieces

Afternoon, good people. You scream, I scream, we all scream for midterms. Here’s hoping that you find the peace in the heart of the lotus. Somewhere way down deep there, somewhere in the lotus but where exactly?, I don’t know, should it be this hard to find?, but you know somebody who found it once, or who heard that or read that, or maybe I knew somebody one time who heard it or read it, the somewhere you could find it. In the lotus.

If it should happen to elude you, at least you’re going on break, which is nothing to sneeze at. Accordingly, the Notes & News event line goes a bit quiet this week, except for this announcement:

·         Monday, March 9, Spring Break Study Break (excuse to gather and have some TD pizza) at 9 pm   Any one who’s around New Haven will be welcome to come over on Monday night, the 9th at 9 pm to my house for plenteous pizza and Greek Salad. We’ll see who’s here and who’s been in a coma and who’s actually done work on a senior thesis, etc. No need to rsvp now – I’ll put out a doodle poll over the weekend to see who’s planning to show up.

Community note: the student kitchen will remain open during the break for the convenience of all. I’ll be sending around a more detailed note this weekend about how we strive to take care of the (new!) kitchen during this time, and so take care of each other. You will not be surprised that there will be a lot language around good citizenship, generosity and above all, CLEANING UP.

 Dean’s Domain

In honor of this not-spring-feeling day, I offer Emily Dickinson’s invitation (invocation?) “Dear March”:

Dear March - Come in -

How glad I am -

I hoped for you before -

Put down your Hat -

You must have walked -

How out of Breath you are -

Dear March, how are you, and the Rest -

Did you leave Nature well -

Oh March, Come right upstairs with me -

I have so much to tell -

I got your Letter, and the Birds -

The Maples never knew that you were coming -

I declare - how Red their Faces grew -

But March, forgive me -

And all those Hills you left for me to Hue -

There was no Purple suitable -

You took it all with you -

Who knocks? That April -

Lock the Door -

I will not be pursued -

He stayed away a Year to call

When I am occupied -

But trifles look so trivial

As soon as you have come

That blame is just as dear as Praise

And Praise as mere as Blame -

(Dean here again, and I will say that Dickinson delights… and excites… and baffles me in almost equal measure!)

Interested in becoming a CCE? The CCE mission is to create a more positive sexual climate on campus. CCEs collaborate with individuals and communities to transform traditional events, gather and share community wisdom, and create space—both literally and figuratively—for people to make mindful social and sexual choices.  CCEs also serve as a resource for students who have experienced or heard about sexual misconduct, providing a peer avenue to accessing SHARE, the UWC, Title IX, and the Yale Police.  The prime qualifications for being a CCE are optimism, creativity, and a desire to make Yale a better place. A sense of humor helps, too! There’s no need for prior experience in sexual violence prevention; everyone goes through extensive training. The CCEs are paid employees of the YCDO. Once the start-of-year trainings are complete, CCEs generally work between 5 and 7 hours per week.  For more information or to apply, please visit us at yale.edu/cce or write to cce@yale.edu.
