2-10-15:  TD Notes & News

Master’s Pieces

Evening, mes amis. Now you know why New Englanders went to sea and chased whales around the world. It was too @#$% cold here. I have floated a proposal that we move Yale down to Kentucky where it belongs. The YCC has promised full support. We’re going to march south, occupy the Colonel Sanders homestead and do this thing right.

Speaking of celebrities, lots of enthusiasm around the courtyard last week for my signing Kate Perry to ride her Super Bowl lion through the TD gate on our Tyng Cup celebration day. Kate wrote me this morning that she’s working on her outfit. The rest is up to the heroes who are taking the IM fields.

Meanwhile, here’s a more immediate attraction:

·         Friday, February 13, 11 pm – 1 am  Evolution of Dance   Rumor has it that Anna Liffey’s – a mere 50 yard dash out the back gate – will host a dance party Friday night in their upper room and, rumor also has it, substantial numbers of TD students are likely to appear. I might wander over myself to take a look; the most amazing things pop up around our neighborhood sometimes.

·         Saturday, February 14, TD Dining Hall closed for dinner   As in the past, we’re being good citizens and closing the DH Saturday so Yale admissions can host the YES weekend, bringing to town an impressive group of candidates interested in Yale science and engineering. Good time to plan with some friends for that tour of the college dining halls you’ve been meaning to take, like forever.

Community note: the Yale College Dean’s Office is looking to hire some new CCE’s for TD for next year, working 5 to 10 hours per week on a range of campus culture initiatives. (You’ll find more info down below.) The app deadline is February 15 and you can apply here. See current CCE’s Corey Mallone-Smolla or Josh Feng if you want to know more.

Community note: every December we take a group of TD’ers to see the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in NYC. Our great alum Vera Wells ‘71TD has let me know that Yale Dance Theater is hosting a symposium on Tuesday, February 17 from 4-6 pm at the Af-Am Cultural Center, focused on the Ailey company and new works based on Ailey’s legacy. More information here, especially of interest for those who taken the TD trips to see the company perform!

Dean’s Domain

Guys, it’s the fifth week of classes, which seems faintly shocking somehow.  February can be a rough month here (or anywhere…), so if you’re feeling snowed under either literally or metaphorically, take heart from Jane Austen’s Emma, in which one Mr. Weston reminds us that he’s “observed, over the course of my life, that if things are going untowardly one month, they are sure to mend the next.”

“Sure to” may seem overly sunny or ambitious to some of you, in which case I’ll point out that Emma also knows the limits of such claims: “Seldom, very seldom, does complete truth belong to any human disclosure; seldom can it happen where something is not a little disguised, or a little mistaken.”

OTHER

Interested in becoming a CCE? The CCE mission is to create a more positive sexual climate on campus. CCEs collaborate with individuals and communities to transform traditional events, gather and share community wisdom, and create space—both literally and figuratively—for people to make mindful social and sexual choices.  CCEs also serve as a resource for students who have experienced or heard about sexual misconduct, providing a peer avenue to accessing SHARE, the UWC, Title IX, and the Yale Police.  The prime qualifications for being a CCE are optimism, creativity, and a desire to make Yale a better place. A sense of humor helps, too! There’s no need for prior experience in sexual violence prevention; everyone goes through extensive training. The CCEs are paid employees of the YCDO. Once the start-of-year trainings are complete, CCEs generally work between 5 and 7 hours per week.  For more information or to apply, please visit us at yale.edu/cce or write to cce@yale.edu.

The Dwight Hall Public School Interns (PSIs)serve as liaisons between a New Haven public school and the Yale community by strengthening current volunteer efforts in the schools and by finding new ways to match resources at Yale with the needs of the school.  PSIs spend time at their school each week, becoming experts on the school community and offering direct service to teachers, students, and administrators. Interns might provide the school with individual tutors, or special one-time programs to enrich current lessons.  Interns work closely with contacts at the school to discuss the role of Yale volunteers and problems the school might be facing.  We currently have 14 interns participating in local elementary, middle, and high schools. Please contact anthony.fumagalli@yale.edu for application and any questions. Applications are due on Friday, Feb. 27.
