MASTER’S PIECES

I’m writing prior to the Super Bowl, and completely neutral about the outcome. If you don’t know follow professional football, be like me and just focus on the buffalo wings opportunity. Very tasty. For those looking beyond tonight’s game, here’s what lies ahead on the home front:

·         Monday, February 3rd, TD Buttery, 10:00 pm  – Chinese New Year Dumpling Wrap-up  Kelly Wu, our Butt Master to the Stars, has asked me to let you know that on Monday evening, in honor of Chinese New Year, the usual buttery antics will instead be replaced with DUMPLINGS. $1 will get you 4 dumplings, BUT if you come and make dumplings with Kelly and Vincent, you will get to eat all the dumplings you make.

·         Thursday, February 6, Master’s House at 4:30 pm –  Master’s Tea with author Christina Kline TD ‘86.  Christina is a TD alum and the New York Times-bestselling author of five novels – Orphan Train, Bird in Hand, The Way Life Should Be, Desire Lines and Sweet Water. (Orphan Train recently reached #8 on the New York Times Bestseller list.) She’s also published five non-fiction books and taught writing at Fordham, NYU and the University of Virginia. She’ll be talking about her life as a writer and a teacher of writing – come and meet her! (Also see the description and reviews of Orphan Train at amazon.com.)

Nice to great a little break in the winter weather, eh? I noticed a few neighbors soaking up some February sunshine in the courtyard today. Gotta get it while you can, my friends.

TD Room Draw begins after Spring Break.  Information about and rules of the room draw (from last year – to be updated soon) are posted at www.yale.edu/td.  TD Housing Committee comprises Cory Combs, Shelby Davis-Cooper, Alexandra Krause (co-chair), Eugene Yi (co-chair), Kelly Wu, Alexander Petros, and two members of the freshman class yet to be selected.   An information meeting for TD freshmen will be held during the week before spring break, TBA.

TUTORING (aka COACHING)

TD Resident Writing Tutor: The TD Writing Tutor is Diane Charney.  Her office is in the basement of TD, room B006, and her email address is diane.charney@yale.edu  .  She has regular hours, which are posted at www.yale.edu/bass/tutoring/residential.html .  A Yale College student may seek the help and advice of any tutor in any residential college.

Writing Partners at the Writing Center: Drop-in tutoring with writing partners during afternoon and evening hours.  See the hours at www.yale.edu/writing .  Writing Partners are Yale College or graduate school students selected for both their writing skills and their ability to talk about writing. Writing partners do not read papers before the appointment, so they will often focus on the beginning of your text or other short sections that you know need help. Still, since many writing problems show up in the first two pages of a paper, this kind of tutoring can be very effective.

TD Resident Math/Science Tutor is Jialu Chen.  Her email address is  jialu.chen@yale.edu .  Her office is TD room B007.  She will be available on Sundays and Thursdays from 8pm to 11pm.  The schedules and science and other specialties of all the residential college math and science tutors are posted at: www.yale.edu/mstutor.   She specializes in economics and calculus.  Reminder: any student is permitted to seek help from other tutors in other residential colleges.

Tutoring in Foreign Languages:  The process for asking for a foreign language tutor is described at  www.cls.yale.edu/tutoring .  A tutor is available to anyone enrolled in a foreign language (regardless of the grade in that course).

Individually Assigned Tutors for QR and Science Courses:  This tutoring is also free of charge.  The form to request a tutor is in the TD dean’s office and available online at  http://science.yalecollege.yale.edu/science-quantitative-reasoning-1

Tutoring in Departments:  Sometimes departments offer tutoring, individually or in groups.  Check with your instructor or in the office of Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Course-Based Peer Tutors:  Ask your instructor if a Course-Based Tutor is available in your QR of Sc course.  These tutors are available in addition to the other resources (such as faculty and Teaching Fellows) associated with the course. The Course-Based Peer Tutors are undergraduates who, in most cases, will have previously taken the course.  Course-Based Peer Tutors attend lectures and are available to students in the course for one-on-one and small group tutoring. These Tutors are overseen by the course instructor.

FRESHMEN

Selecting a Sophomore Year Faculty Adviser:   As you arrange to meet and do meet and do talk to  teachers this term, I remind you to keep in mind that by the end of April you must ask someone to be your adviser during your sophomore year.  In due course you will receive an email about the process.  Just giving you a heads up so you can continue to plan ahead.

NOTES

After meeting some friends, I cut across the green on my way back to TD.  Some teenagers are squeezed on a bench by the corner; otherwise, the green is empty.  Empty, that is, as far as I can see.  I know that hidden in the dark and cold are many small creatures – some still, some lively. Though I know the green is a landscape, a ground planned and groomed by humans, I feel the present tense as I walk, that tense of wildness as I cross into a land between what I know and what I do not, where I belong and yet do not, and where I must seek a sense of how I fit.   It is a feeling I seek sometimes on backpacks into countries we name wild and set apart for it.

And as I step along the path and enter the heart of the green, I have a sense of passage into something hidden and even something that resists me. My tense is not a sense of danger.  It is that heightened sense of walking into the place of the natural. And that row of lighted globes on black poles along the path do not matter, though they differ so from the scattered trees, so in a line they are with their white light so artificial.  On this landscape they do fit just as I might as they line my way and limn me along with the other creatures – in my view or not.

Preoccupied with these thoughts and sensing all I can, I find myself at the other side, at the corner of Temple and Elm. I think to look back but change my mind.  I want to keep my experience present in my recollection of it.  I do not want to fix my passage in the wild into a frame of the past tense.  I look forward.  I look forward to tomorrow Green and what it will again place in me.  Dean Loge
