Notes & News - Week of February 23rd, 2015

February 24, 2015

2-24-15:  TD Notes & News

Master’s Pieces

Morning, folks. More “fresh breezes” at the moment, with a temp hovering around 4 F. A good lung full will wake you up. We’re starting construction on a Swedish sauna in the courtyard, which should be ready for use about mid-July. I’m all about critical improvements in the college.

As we roll into heavy midterm season, here’s what’s in store for the week:

·         Tuesday, February 24, Iron Chef Competition at 5 pm in Commons   Great event, with lots of free food and interesting food exhibitions, plus the opportunity to cheer our TD team to victory in the cooking competition portion of the evening. Walk over there, it’s just not that far, and get into the food. (Our team also gets points relative to how many folks show up!)

·         Friday, February 27, TD Sophomore Dinner  We start with a reception in the Master’s House at 5:30 pm and then head down to your special dinner in the DH at 6:15. If you’re a sophomore, watch your email for more details. If you’re not a sophomore, you’ll be touring the wonderful world of residential college dining elsewhere that evening. It’s all good, just not as good as TD.

·         Saturday, February 28, TUIB and TD Friends concert in the DH, starting at 9 pm   Tangled Up in Blue (TUIB) returns for the umpteenth straight year in this fantastic TD tradition celebrating, what else?, roots music. TUIB will draw their huge campus following, incorporate some of their special friends for performances, and also include some special TD guest artist appearances. Ask anyone, this is a mood elevator going to the top floor.

Community note: it’s incredible how a small act of thoughtfulness or kindness makes a difference, especially this time of year, when the combination of winter and midterms and the approaching break and approaching room draw (or graduation!) has people generally in mood-challenged state. Think of someone you happen to know who’s bitten off more than they can chew and figure out a way to offer a word of encouragement or lighten their day. It could be anything.

 Dean’s Domain

From a part of Ralph Ellison’s draft Invisible Man; it ended up on the cutting-room floor during the editing process but it has since been salvaged: “Still the passion persists.  I feel the need to reaffirm all of it, the whole unhappy territory and all the things loved and unlovable in it, for it is all part of me.”

I think sometimes Yale culture suggests that only “the things loved” – the joys, the successes, the IM victories – merit memory or affirmation; but Ellison is on the money in insisting on the “need to reaffirm all of it… for it is all part of me (you, Yale itself).”  And really, this is the only honest way to go forward – here or anywhere.

Interested in becoming a CCE? The CCE mission is to create a more positive sexual climate on campus. CCEs collaborate with individuals and communities to transform traditional events, gather and share community wisdom, and create space—both literally and figuratively—for people to make mindful social and sexual choices.  CCEs also serve as a resource for students who have experienced or heard about sexual misconduct, providing a peer avenue to accessing SHARE, the UWC, Title IX, and the Yale Police.  The prime qualifications for being a CCE are optimism, creativity, and a desire to make Yale a better place. A sense of humor helps, too! There’s no need for prior experience in sexual violence prevention; everyone goes through extensive training. The CCEs are paid employees of the YCDO. Once the start-of-year trainings are complete, CCEs generally work between 5 and 7 hours per week.  For more information or to apply, please visit us at yale.edu/cce or write to cce@yale.edu.

The Dwight Hall Public School Interns (PSIs)serve as liaisons between a New Haven public school and the Yale community by strengthening current volunteer efforts in the schools and by finding new ways to match resources at Yale with the needs of the school.  PSIs spend time at their school each week, becoming experts on the school community and offering direct service to teachers, students, and administrators. Interns might provide the school with individual tutors, or special one-time programs to enrich current lessons.  Interns work closely with contacts at the school to discuss the role of Yale volunteers and problems the school might be facing.  We currently have 14 interns participating in local elementary, middle, and high schools. Please contact anthony.fumagalli@yale.edu for application and any questions. Applications are due on Friday, Feb. 27.
