2-17-15:  TD Notes & News

Master’s Pieces

Evening, destinarians. You know, I’m getting weary of making clever remarks about the winter weather. Enough already. We surrender. Send in the cavalry, burn more fossil fuels, do whatever it takes to get us to April tomorrow. (Just kidding about the fossil fuel part. Is mentioning the cavalry politically incorrect?)  Also, shout out to the TD SAC for the Anna Liffey’s “formal” dance and for Dean, who insisted she was all about making the scene and scoring some beat matches and breakdowns. Good times, and oh so close to the back gate.

So in this dark and drear February snowmaggedon, what do we have to look forward to?

·         Wednesday, February 18, 7 pm  Senior Class Wine and Cheese Tasting in the Master’s House   IF you are a SENIOR and IF you haven’t let me know you are coming, be a good dooby and email me now. If you are not a senior, this is something you can look forward to down the road. Our friends the owners of Caseus put on a great show.

·         Tuesday, February 24, Iron Chef Competition at 5 pm in Commons   Great event, with lots of free food and interesting food exhibitions, plus the opportunity to cheer our TD team to victory in the cooking competition portion of the evening. Walk over there, it’s just not that far, and get into the food.

·         Friday, February 27, TD Sophomore Dinner  We start with a reception in the Master’s House at 5:30 pm and then head down to your special dinner in the DH at 6:15. If you’re a sophomore, watch your email for more details. If you’re not a sophomore, you’ll be touring the wonderful world of residential college dining elsewhere that evening. It’s all good, just not as good as TD.

·         Saturday, February 28, TUIB and TD Friends concert in the DH, starting at 9 pm   Tangled Up in Blue (TUIB) returns for the umpteenth straight year in this fantastic TD tradition celebrating, what else?, roots music. TUIB will draw their huge campus following, incorporate some of their special friends for performances, and also include some special TD guest artist appearances. Ask anyone, this is a mood elevator going to the top floor.

Community note: our writing coach to the stars, Diane Charney, has let me know that she’s got some untapped hours on her schedule. You can go to the Yale Writing Center scheduler to find an open time. IF THERE IS NONE, SHE WILL MAKE YOU ONE if you email her at diane.charney@yale.edu.

 Dean’s Domain

In honor of our continuing atop the Tyng Cup standings (and in hopes of getting more of you to turn out – – turn up – turn down – !?) for these often truly riveting games, I present to you one of my favorite sports poems, by the great Louisianan Yusef Komunyakaa.

Slam, Dunk, & Hook

Fast breaks. Lay ups. With Mercury’s

Insignia on our sneakers,

We outmaneuvered to footwork

Of bad angels. Nothing but a hot

Swish of strings like silk

Ten feet out. In the roundhouse

Labyrinth our bodies

Created, we could almost

Last forever, poised in midair

Like storybook sea monsters.

A high note hung there

A long second. Off

The rim. We’d corkscrew

Up & dunk balls that exploded

The skullcap of hope & good

Intention. Lanky, all hands

& feet…sprung rhythm.

We were metaphysical when girls

Cheered on the sidelines.

Tangled up in a falling,

Muscles were a bright motor

Double-flashing to the metal hoop

Nailed to our oak.

When Sonny Boy’s mama died

He played nonstop all day, so hard

Our backboard splintered.

Glistening with sweat,

We rolled the ball off

Our fingertips. Trouble

Was there slapping a blackjack

Against an open palm.

Dribble, drive to the inside,

& glide like a sparrow hawk.

Lay ups. Fast breaks.

We had moves we didn’t know

We had. Our bodies spun

On swivels of bone & faith,

Through a lyric slipknot

Of joy, & we knew we were

Beautiful & dangerous.

Interested in becoming a CCE? The CCE mission is to create a more positive sexual climate on campus. CCEs collaborate with individuals and communities to transform traditional events, gather and share community wisdom, and create space—both literally and figuratively—for people to make mindful social and sexual choices.  CCEs also serve as a resource for students who have experienced or heard about sexual misconduct, providing a peer avenue to accessing SHARE, the UWC, Title IX, and the Yale Police.  The prime qualifications for being a CCE are optimism, creativity, and a desire to make Yale a better place. A sense of humor helps, too! There’s no need for prior experience in sexual violence prevention; everyone goes through extensive training. The CCEs are paid employees of the YCDO. Once the start-of-year trainings are complete, CCEs generally work between 5 and 7 hours per week.  For more information or to apply, please visit us at yale.edu/cce or write to cce@yale.edu.

Interns might provide the school with individual tutors, or special one-time programs to enrich current lessons.  Interns work closely with contacts at the school to discuss the role of Yale volunteers and problems the school might be facing.  We currently have 14 interns participating in local elementary, middle, and high schools.
