Timothy Dwight Notes and News – Week of September 7, 2015

ML’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

I hope you all had a great Labor Day weekend and now look forward to starting the new week.  Our family started this morning by joining in the New Haven Road Race, the largest road race in the state.  It was our kids’ first time and they loved having real racers’ bibs pinned to their running jerseys and friends cheering from the sidelines.  What I have always loved about the race is seeing the many different runners from all parts of the city and across the state join in the run.  And this year it was a thrill to go along Temple and past our beautiful college! We also heard that there were other Red Lions out there hitting the asphalt with us.  Next year, you can expect Dr. B and I to work on getting all the TD runners together to have a real showing!

I also wish to give a quick update to the conversation we’ve started in TD about the title and address “master” and “associate master”.  I have loved hearing the students shout “Mixmaster Lui” from across the courtyard so feel free to keep that up along with the professional addresses that have been used thus far – Master Lui and Professor Lui.  I will be working with Ben Ackerman, chief aide, to discuss ways to continue the conversation in the college.  In the meantime, I invite all of you to participate in a questionnaire that will allow students, faculty, and staff to offer opinions unanimously.  This survey is also being sent out to all of the other residential college communities.  Here is the link:  http://tinyurl.com/collegemasterquestionnaire

As you get ready for another week of shopping period, I hope you find inspiration from Shelby Daniels-Young’s photograph, “Studying Humanities.”  I love the juxtaposition of the Cold War thriller, The Manchurian Candidate, with the Gilded Age classic, House of Mirth.  Please click on the attachment to see Shelby’s wonderful picture.

There is much to celebrate this week with many of the beloved TD spaces in the college coming back online.  And, of course, the much anticipated Community Night and Llamaland celebrations are just days away!

Monday 9/7 Reopening of the TD Kitchen

Our popular kitchen – where students can make simple muffins and pancakes along with gourmet meals– is back online.  Reservations can be made on the TD Website.

Recording Studio Information

Have you ever wanted to record your own music? Have you ever wanted to make a #1 hit and sell more albums than Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars?  Come to the TD recording studio and learn the entire recording process and become certified engineers! Email jordan.plotner@yale.edu or sign up at the TD Community Night for more details. Check out the TD Studio Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/timothydwightrecordingstudio?ref=hl

Tuesday 9/8 5pm Creative and Performing Arts (CPA) Awards Deadline

Last call for submitting an application for funding support ranging from a few hundred to over a thousand dollars for student art related productions.

Wednesday 9/9 8:00pm Community Night/Pizza Welcome to the Class of 2019 (TD Dining Hall)

A TD tradition and our favorite form of self-entertainment. We’ve got a very full slate of entertainers now so we will be up late celebrating the incredible talent and spirit in our college. Dean and Mixmaster Lui will perform with a special musical guest that you will not want to miss.  There will be singing Frocos as well as comedy.  Other great surprises will be in store so do not miss this event!

Friday 9/11 7:30-9pm First Ever TD  Friday Table Top Games Night (TD House)

The Lui/Balbarin family is excited to hold the first of many Friday game nights on the 2nd floor of their home.  There will be different types of games available to choose.  Mateo and Octavio cannot wait to introduce you to their favorite game and teach all of you how to play.  Light refreshments will be served.

Sunday 9/13 9:00 AM – Llamaland!

Yes, there are llamas at Llamaland! Freshmen, you have heard all about this from day one.  The upperclassmen become aides just so they can have the opportunity to do it again.  Wish the freshmen your best, and encourage them to believe that they will be the first to beat the upperclassmen in razzle dazzle football. Everyone needs encouragement to dream the impossible dream.

Looking ahead to the following week, please save the dates for these important events:

Saturday 9/19 8pm SAC Courtyard Movie (TD Lower Courtyard)

TD’s first ever outdoor movie!  SAC will transform our lower courtyard into a magical amphitheater.  Bring your blankets, pillows, and sleeping bags (not furniture) onto the lower courtyard.

Sunday 9/20 11:00am Brunch with Eric Liu TD ‘90

Informal brunch with a TD alum and write who founded of Citizen University.  Liu also served as Deputy Assistant to President Bill Clinton for Domestic Policy at the White House.  To learn more about Eric Liu’s work, you can access his TED talk, here:  http://www.ted.com/talks/eric_liu_why_ordinary_people_need_to_understand_power?language=en

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Dean’s Domain

Happy first week of shopping to you all!  It’s been fun to see the excitement and anticipation on (most of) your faces as you’ve headed off to classes.  The challenge: How many of you can maintain those faces in November?

I’ve been rereading Twain’s Puddn’head Wilson lately, in which the title character keeps an almanac of collected witticisms and wisdoms.  One of my favorites:

“Behold, the fool saith, ‘Put not all thine eggs in the one basket – which is but a matter of saying, ‘Scatter your money and your attention’; but the wise man saith, ‘Put all your eggs in the one basket and – WATCH THAT BASKET.”

I’ll let you each decide how to divvy up your eggs, TD.  But I think WATCH THAT BASKET can stand as good advice for the week.

ACADEMICS

Course Schedule Deadlines (after the world’s longest shopping period; freshmen, it will likely never be this way again!):

Classes of 2019 and 2018- Wednesday, September 16, 5:00 pm

Classes of 2017 and 2016- Thursday, September 17, 5:00 pm

Schedules are handed in to Trish Cawley in the TD Dean’s Office.  The 5:00 p.m. deadline is strictly enforced.  A late schedule incurs a fine of…. surprise! fifty dollars and a late schedule cannot elect any courses CR/D/Fail.

A schedule of 3.0 or 3.5 course credits OR a schedule of 6.0 or 6.5 course credits needs my permission before the schedule is handed in.  Email Trish at patricia.cawley@yale.edu to schedule an appointment to see me.

On-line Course Selection:  www.yale.edu/sis

1.       Use the worksheet capabilities to search courses to shop during shopping period.
2.       After you have settled on the courses you will take, print your final schedule.
3.       Take the final schedule to your adviser for the signature. Sign the schedule.
4.       Hand in your signed schedule to the TD Dean’s Office by the deadline for your class.

I’ll remind you that (1) the program does not check for conflicts in class meeting times (that is every student’s responsibility) and that (2) once you print your final schedule, you cannot reenter the program to make changes and print a different final schedule.  Including or removing a course (after meeting with your adviser, for instance) must be hand written on the printed final schedule itself (in the Include and Remove Sections), and each change must be initialed by your adviser or me before the deadline for handing in the hard copy.

A schedule with a course in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (and also not listed in the Blue Book) or a professional school requires an additional form, which is available in the TD Dean’s Office and atwww.yale.edu/sfas/registrar/blue_form.pdf.  Hand in the completed form with the syllabus attached by the deadline for your course schedule.  [Note: SOM courses cannot be added to your schedule through OCS; they must be written by hand in the “include” section on your schedule. The form for SOM courses must be handed in to my office in the first week of shopping period, well before the deadline for your course schedule, because SOM determines its class enrollments well before your schedule is due.]  Courses at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and at a professional school cannot elect the CR/D/Fail option.

When you put a Graduate or Professional School course on your schedule, zero (0) course credits are recorded for the course until you hand in to my office the form for graduate school courses (syllabus attached) and the registrar’s office determines the course credits for that course after that. Some courses earn 1 course credit in Yale College and some earn 0.5 course credits (most commonly in SOM and EPH).

Independent Studies (Directed Reading, Directed Research, etc. as listed by most departments). There are limits on the number that a student can enroll in during a given year and over four years. Enrolling in an independent study requires the additional permission of a Director of Undergraduate Studies.

A list of Sc courses without prerequisites may be found athttp://science.yalecollege.yale.edu/academics/faculty-resources/science-courses-without-prerequisite.

A list of QR courses without prerequisites may be found athttp://science.yalecollege.yale.edu/academics/courses/qr-courses/qr-courses-without-prerequisite.
