Notes and News – Week of 9/5

HL’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

I hope everyone had a great long weekend and are looking forward to getting back to classes and finalizing schedules!

Labor Day was busier than usual for the college.  My family gathered with TDers to run the annual New Haven Road Race early in the morning.  Afterwards, our TD first years, frocos, and college aides boarded buses to Sunnyside Farm in Bethany, CT. We were very warmly welcomed by TD Fellows Anne and Guido Calabresi who gave us full run of their beautiful property.  As you can see from these “photos of the week” we could not have asked for a more gorgeous day to run through the city or bask in the warmth of Sunnyside!

And thanks to Froco Rosa Vargas for this great pic of our first-years before the Yale Up rally!

Here are some great events for next week:

Tuesday 9/12 8:30pm TD Community Night (TD Dining Hall)

We have had a number of TDers sign up already to perform.  Expect music, comedy, and magic!  We still have room for a few more people to sign up.  Please go to this link if you are interested in participating

Saturday 9/16 1-5pm TD Community Chamber Orchestra Auditions (Thompson Room)

The TD Orchestra is looking forward to another great year!  We are excited to have back Kay Nakazawa TD ’17 as our concertmaster and our new conductor will be graduate student Paul Strike.  They will be holding auditions for all returning players and newcomers.  For anyone interested in participating please contact him atpaul.strike@yale.edu to sign up for an audition time slot.  If anyone is interested in serving in the role of “narrator” or “storyteller” for a piece, please also contact Paul.  The first rehearsal is set for Sunday 9/24 from 4-5:30pm

TD Underground Spaces Update

Many of you have asked when we will be reopening the TD underground spaces – Buttery, Recording Studio, Art Studio, Selin Lounge, and music practice rooms.  Please know that the music rooms can now be used and students need to come to the HoC office to sign up for swipe access.  For all other spaces, please know that the Head of College Office is working with our TD aides team to get them back up and running.  We are aiming to have spaces reopened following the end of shopping period. We will be announcing new classes for both the TD recording studio and the art studio and there will be a new sign up system for the Selin Lounge.  So please stay tuned for those announcements.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Áshe,

HL

In honor of the great poet John Ashberry, who died at age 90 on Sunday, the close of his poem “A Blessing in Disguise”:

I prefer “you” in the plural, I want “you,”
You must come to me, all golden and pale
Like the dew and the air.
And then I start getting this feeling of exaltation.

Course Schedule Deadlines (all at 5:00 p.m.):

A schedule of 3.0 or 3.5 course credits OR a schedule of 6.0 or 6.5 course credits needs my permission before the schedule is handed in.  Email Trish at patricia.cawley@yale.edu to schedule an appointment to see me.

Volunteers Around the World
Are you interested in medicine? Public Health? Traveling abroad? Volunteers Around the World is a national organization that operates mobile medical clinics in various developing countries, from Thailand to Peru. VAW Yale team members gain memorable and hands-on experience from the clinics, from educational activities, and from being immersed in another country’s culture. If that sounds like your cup of tea (or you are curious to learn more), come out to our informational meeting on Thursday, September 15th, 7pm in LC101! We hope to see you there!
