Notes and News – Week of 9/5

ML’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

I hope everyone enjoyed the Labor Day weekend.  We were lucky to not suffer the wrath of Hermine.  Instead the cool winds created perfect running weather for the annual New Haven Labor Day Road Race!  This week’s “photo of the week” is titled “Running Red Lions” and features some of our runners gathering in the TD courtyard right before we sprinted off to our respective races.  This is the first year that TD sponsored runners for this race and I am delighted that we had over 30 racers in the 5k and 20k competitions!  And more excitingly, TD freshman Tim Foldy-Porto finished 6th in the 5K!  If your rooms faced onto Temple St., you no doubt heard the crowds cheering on the racers as they went by TD and onto the home stretch for the photo finish.

Speaking of new TD community events for this fall, I am delighted to announce that TD alum, Paul Steffan ’16, and TD senior Kay Nakazawa, are starting a new orchestra for the college.  The Timothy Dwight Community Chamber Orchestra will be open to current students, local alums, residents, and fellows of TD.  The organizers welcome players of all abilities, ages, and levels of orchestra experience.  And they encourage any musician to give it a try even if they play an instrument that would not appear in a traditional orchestra.  Auditions will take place in the Thompson Room (next door to the TD Dining Hall) during the weekend of 9/17.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email Paul and Kay at paul.steffan@yale.edu or kay.nakazawa@yale.edu.  More details about the audition process will be forthcoming in a separate email.

For this week, here are some important dates to note:

Friday 9/9 7:30-9pm  TD Friday Game Night (TD House)

Friday Game Nights are back!  The Balbarin/Lui family invites you to our first Friday Game Night to play some of our favorite board games from Ticket to Ride to Settlers of Cataan and classics like Scrabble.  No worries if you don’t know how to play.  Half the fun is learning and trying out new games!  Drinks and snacks provided.

Saturday 9/10 9am  Llama Land

Decades old TD tradition to welcome our freshman! And, yes, there are llamas at Llamaland along with volleyball, football, nature walks, Egyptian art, and great food, music, and fun.  The upperclassmen wish they can do it again, but this is for freshmen only!  Please gather in the courtyard around 9am to load up. Buses leave at 9:30am sharp!

Looking ahead to next week, here are some events to put on your calendars:

Tuesday 9/13 8-10pm TD Community Night (TD Dining Hall)

One of our favorite TD traditions where we all gather to celebrate and enjoy the talent and spirit in our college. Singers, bands, stand-up comedians, poets, etc. are just some of the many wonderful acts you’ll see.  Freshmen are especially encouraged to sign up and perform and join in the fun!  Anyone who wishes to perform should contact Stage Manager, Dennis Vu at dennis.vu@yale.edu and let him know what you plan to do.

Wednesday 9/14 8-9pm Yale-China Association Exchange Program Info Session (Thompson Room)

Stop by for an information session on Yale-China Association’s YUNA and L(U)CY exchange programs programs between Yale University and New Asia College at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Lingnan (University) College at Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, China, respectively. Applications are currently open and fellow Red Lions Janice Poon and Tyler Bleuel and a Sillimander Mahir Rahman will share their experiences and answer questions.  Snacks very likely!

Saturday 9/17 11-12:30pm “Meet the Alum” brunch with Dr. Ann Hess TD ’87 (Thompson Room)

For our first “meet the alum” brunch, TD welcomes back Dr. Ann Hess, who graduated from Yale with a BA in American Studies.  A Marshall Scholar, she completed a PhD at Cambridge University in 17th c. cultural and social history and later attended Harvard Medical School. An adult and child psychiatrist-psychotherapist with a teaching appointment at Harvard Medical School (Cambridge Hospital) and a private practice in Newton, MA. She will be visiting with her husband, Errol Norwitz (Chairman of Ob-Gyn at Tufts) and their son, Sam.  To reserve a place at the brunch, please go to this link.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Dean’s Domain

“You were six and your brother was four, my mother said.  The whole day passed, a lovely day, and at the end, I knew something was different, but I wasn’t quite sure what.  Ah, that’s it! I said to myself.  Nobody cried today!  For the first time in six years, nobody cried!
We used to laugh at that story when my boys were young and the crisis would come and go, dried up by the vanished sunlight like summer storms, fast-finished but ever-present.”

Course Schedule Deadlines (all at 5:00 p.m.):
Classes of 2020 – Monday, September 12
Classes of 2019 and 2018 – Tuesday, September 13
Class of 2017 – Wednesday, September 14

Schedules are handed in to Trish Cawley in the TD Dean’s Office.  The 5:00 p.m. deadline is strictly enforced.  A late schedule incurs a fine of fifty dollars (there it is again!) and a late schedule may not elect any courses CR/D/Fail.

A schedule of 3.0 or 3.5 course credits OR a schedule of 6.0 or 6.5 course credits needs my permission before the schedule is handed in.  Email Trish at patricia.cawley@yale.edu to schedule an appointment to see me.

September 14 is the deadline to apply for a fall term Leave of Absence. See me if you are thinking about requesting a leave of absence for this fall term.

Apply to be a Gallery Guide!
The Gallery Guide program is a paid opportunity for Yale undergraduates to learn about the museum’s collection and how to teach from objects. Students participate in a yearlong training program with education and collections curators, during which they are taught to lead interactive, close-looking tours of the museum for the Yale community and the New Haven public. The in-depth training requires a time commitment similar to that of an academic course. Following the completion of the first year of training, students remain involved with the Gallery Guide program by continuing to give museum tours and participating in weekly gallery sessions throughout their time at Yale.
This is an excellent opportunity for undergraduates to integrate art into their experience at Yale and to become part of the Yale University Art Gallery community. The program is open to freshmen, sophomores, and juniors in Yale College. Students in all majors are encouraged to apply.  Applications are due by midnight on Monday, September 12.  Contact ryan.hill@yale.edu for more details.
