Notes and News – Week of 9/28/2015

ML’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

I hope many of you ventured into the courtyard last evening to catch the spectacular supermoon lunar eclipse, a rare blood-red total eclipse, that occurs when the earth moves between the sun and the moon and the earth’s shadow completely covers the moon.  To read more about why the moon turned red, go to EarthSky.  Such an event has not occurred since 1982 and is not expected to happen again until 2033!  This will be a wonderful memory to share with one another for the many years to come.

This week’s photo of the week comes from Nat Aramayo and is titled, “TD Community Blood Moon.”  Many TDers think they saw a lion – not a man – in the breathtaking red moon.  Definitely not going to disagree.  I am reading this as a sign that TD will win the Tyng Cup again this year!

It was a pleasure to welcome back so many TD parents this weekend.  We were delighted to welcome some parents and siblings to Friday game night.  And I was very excited to recognize so many faces from move-in weekend and meet many of the parents of our upperclassmen.  No one could have asked for better weather and an even more dramatic come from the behind finish from our football team!  Go Bulldogs!

Now that parents have departed we move back to our regularly scheduled programming with our first Master’s tea in TD with documentary filmmaker Curtis Chin.   We are rapidly hurtling into midterms week with the first major assignments and exams of the semester.  Please don’t forget to seek out Alison Moncrief-Bromage if you need assistance with your papers. She loves working with our students and is a warm and generous teacher.  You can easily reach her via email atalison.moncriefbromage@yale.edu

Here are this week’s events in TD:

Monday 9/28 8pm Freshman Night at the Buttery

Come for the free food, but stay for the fun and friendship!  The TD buttery is one of the special places in our college that makes TD feel like a special home.  Our upperclassmen have been working and volunteering for years perfecting their fryolator and grill master techniques.  The amazing team of buttery aides look forward to welcoming our new Freshmen and talking about the many ways to be a part of the fun.

Wednesday 9/30 4pm Master’s Tea with Curtis Chin, Tested: Testing the Boundaries of Race and Education

Our first tea of the year!  Tested looks at the lack of racial diversity at the top public high schools in New York City by following a dozen families from different racial, socio-economic and religious backgrounds as they prepare to pass the grueling entrance exam.  The film screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker.

Looking ahead to next week, here are some special events to put on your calendar!

Friday 10/9 7:30-9:30 pm TD Game Night

One of the easiest ways to meet the TDers across the classes!  Snacks and drinks provided!

Saturday 10/10 11am Brunch with Gabe Ling TD ‘04

Informal brunch with TD alum and venture capitalist specializing in the tech and health care sectors in his work with General Catalyst.  An economics major at Yale, Gabe also interned at the Yale Investments Office. He was also a serious musician as an undergraduate.  You can learn more about Gabe at his site.

If you would like to meet Gabe, please sign up here:

Save the Date:  Sunday 10/18 Field trip to 2pm matinee performance of Hir, by Taylor Mac and produced by Playwrights Horizons

Our first TD field trip of the year to the Big Apple will feature the Playwrights Horizons production of Hir, by Taylor Mac. This dark comedy exploring themes of non-gender conformity and transgender identity will make us laugh and think hard about the gender conventions and family dynamics we take for granted.  TD has been fortunate to receive fifteen tickets to the performance.  We will begin the sign ups next week.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Ashe,

ML

Dean’s Domain

I’ve done something totally outrageous this Monday, TD.  I have moved “Other” to the top of my section of Notes and News.  I’ve done this because “Other” tends to contain the most new information, but it’s historically languished at the end of the message where, I suspect, it often goes unread.  Today, “Other” takes its ascendant place!

I am also taking nominations for a heading other than “Other.”

In the meantime, though, I have managed to find a piece of literature relating to the word ‘other.’  Don’t ever say your dean doesn’t work hard for you.

A stanza of Edward Thomas’s poem, “The Other”:

And all was earth’s, or all was sky’s;

No difference endured between

The two. A dog barked on a hidden rise;

A marshbird whistled high unseen;

The latest waking blackbird’s cries

Perished upon the silence keen.

The last light filled a narrow firth

Among the clouds.  I stood serene,

And with a solemn quiet mirth,

An old inhabitant of earth.
