Notes and News – Week of 9/26

Head of College’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

With the fall weather comes not only cooler temperatures, but midterms and papers.  The many activities set up these next couple of weeks should help many of you find good academic advice, fun, and good cheer in the midst of midterms season.  If you have not yet met TD’s new fall writing tutor, Barbara Riley, please do stop by her office in the basement of entryway C or make an appointment.  Our fall writing tutor of the last couple of years, Alison Moncrief-Bromage, has taken on the writing tutor position at Ezra Stiles College and we send her many good wishes as well as thank her for her wonderful service to TD students.

Speaking of great service to TD, I want to take a moment to applaud our incredible Buttery co-managers, Tongil “Tom” Ko ‘18 and Sem Kroon ‘18, who have reopened the Buttery with a giant bang of energy!  Tom sent in this week’s “photo of the week” titled “Taco Night in the Butt” and features head chef Sem leading a whole crew of Buttery workers and volunteers to serve up beef, chicken, and veggie tacos. Dr. B and I were lucky enough to get a taste and I hope many of you did, too.  Look for more specialty nights throughout this semester from this creative team of chefs!  And if anyone wants to sign up to work paid shifts or volunteer at the Buttery, please email the co-managers at sem.kroon@yale.edu or tongil.ko@yale.edu.

Building a Positive Sexual Culture: The Core Toolkit

This two-afternoon workshop is open to any student who wants to take an active role in fighting sexual violence and fostering a more inclusive, supportive climate at Yale.  The Fall 2016 training will take place on the afternoons of October 1 and 2 from 1-4pm.  On Saturday, we’ll be doing an in-depth look at the dynamics of sexual violence, campus sexual norms, and effective strategies for making change.  Sunday’s session will focus on effectively supporting friends who have experienced sexual violence: we’ll talk about common challenges, practice empathetic listening skills, meet with people from SHARE, the UWC, and Title IX to learn more about campus resources, and work on strategies for self-care.  Students can attend one or both days. Click here to register.  If you have any questions, contact Dean Melanie Boyd (melanie.boyd@yale.edu).
