Notes and News – Week of 9/21/2015

ML’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

If you were in the lower courtyard on Saturday night you would have heard much laughter coming from our first ever movie night hosted by SAC.  Although I am still not a fan of children’s movies that need to traumatize their young viewers with opening scenes of the death of the mother, I can still be charmed by the escapades of cute talking fish.  Once again we got very lucky with the weather and had the perfect evening for sitting underneath the stars with friends and family.  We will certainly be doing this again at the end of the year.

This week’s photo of the week, “Movie Night,” comes from Alex Zhang and captures the magic of Saturday’s courtyard movie.

On Sunday, we had a thoughtful discussion around public service, grassroots organizing, and leadership with TD ‘90 alum Eric Liu, author and former speechwriter for President Bill Clinton, and most recently the founder of Citizenship University.  We explored how students can think about public service as an “authentic” engagement that aims to promote social equality and push us to learn and grow.  This brunch is hopefully the beginning of many more “meet the alum” brunches.  I have had the pleasure of corresponding with several TD alumni who want to be of service to the college and our students.  Having small informal weekend brunches that allow for easy conversation with our accomplished alumni will hopefully lead to many wonderful productive connections.

This weekend will be parents’ weekend and the Balbarin/Lui family looks forward to inviting your families to a reception in our house from 4:30-6pm, following the Yale v. Cornell football game at the Yale Bowl.

Here are some other great TD activities to put on your radar:

Friday 9/25 Friday Game Night 7:30pm

Got sheep?  Ore??  Wheat???  Ok, table top game fans… get ready for another fun filled night.  By popular demand we’re going to go until 9:30pm.  Please feel free to bring your favorite board games to share.  And come alone or with a friend. You will be guaranteed to have fun!

Saturday 9/26 8pm Ian Hendrickson-Smith Band at the Neighborhood Music School

Please join Mixmaster Lui and Dr. B for an outing to the Neighborhood Music School – just across the street from TD – to see renowned saxophonist and flutist, Ian Hendrickson-Smith.  He is currently playing with the Roots as a member of Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show band.  To read more about the event, go here: http://neighborhoodmusicschool.org/calendar/event/2/1126

If you are interested in going, please sign up on this Google Form.  We will randomly select ten students to receive free tickets to the show.

Looking ahead to the following week, we will have our first master’s tea of the year!

Wednesday 9/30 4pm Master’s Tea with Curtis Chin, Tested: Testing the Boundaries of Race and Education

Tested looks at the lack of racial diversity at the top public high schools in New York City by following a dozen families from different racial, socio-economic and religious backgrounds as they prepare to pass the grueling entrance exam for a spot in one of the city’s top performing high schools.  The film screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Dean’s Domain

I am looking forward to greeting (or meeting) (or re-meeting) many of your families this weekend; please stop and say hello when you see some combination of me, Matt, June, Dash, and Pig in the courtyard!

This week I’d like to share a passage from Kate Chopin’s The Awakening, a novel about which I have complex-to-ambivalent feelings (come ask me about them if you’ve read it – or offer your own and help me work through mine!).  It’s an early description of the central character (whom I can’t quite describe as a heroine), Edna Pontellier:

“Even as a child she had lived her own small life all within herself. At a very early period she had apprehended instinctively the dual life—that outward existence which conforms, the inward life which questions.”

I’m compelled by the general idea of a “dual life,” though troubled by the pair suggested here.  I’d encourage you guys, as you’re thinking through your own dualisms (or more-isms?), to affirm the “own small life all within,” and yet to think critically about the distinctions we draw – or which we allow to be drawn for us – between outward and inward.
