Notes and News – Week of 9/19

Head of College’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

I hope many of you made it out to our fall semester TD Community Night.  We had such an incredible line up of performers that had us laughing, singing, and clapping into the night!  I can’t thank everyone enough for getting up and sharing.  If you didn’t get a chance to perform this term, please know that we get to do this all over again in the spring so start working on your acts now!

This “photo of the week” titled “Staying Alive” sent by Emily Reinwald TD ’17 captures fellow seniors Nick Kelly and Claire Mallon doing their “rated G” comedy/juggling routine.  Judging from the raucous laughter and clapping throughout the Dining Hall they were a massive hit!  If you missed their routine, you can watch it via this link.  And if you’ve already, save it for those days when you will need a good laugh!

After a few very busy opening weeks to the semester, we are going to take it slowly… until Friday:

Friday 9/23 12pm Yale Entrepreneurial Institute Lunch (Thompson Room)

If you are interested in social entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship, innovation or are just curious, we will talk you through the amazing resources you can access during your time at Yale. We will cover grant and prize funding opportunities, workshops, classes, programming at Yale Entrepreneurial Institute, Yale Center for Business and Environment, InnovateHealth Yale, and many more resources across the university. Yale student entrepreneurs will also share their experiences navigating their time at Yale!   Questions?  Email Kassie.Tucker@yale.edu

Friday 9/23 7:30pm TD SAC Courtyard Movie Night (TD Lower Courtyard)

Back by popular demand, our wonderful SAC will set up the inflatable movie screen and show Mulan at 7:30pm and 21 Jump Street at 9:15pm.  Bring a blanket and pillows to spread out on the lawn.  (No heavy furniture please.)  We hope to see you all there to enjoy one of the last nights of “summer” and the wonderful TD community.

For next week, here are some important dates to note:

Monday 9/26 8pm Joint TD/Silliman Info Session on Study Abroad (Silliman Fellows’ Lounge, 4th floor Byers Hall)

Stefani Kuo ’17 and Emmet Hedin ’17 – the CIPE Study Abroad Outreach Coordinators, will be available to talk about study abroad at Yale, answer all of your questions, and share some amazing stories!  TD and Silliman upperclassmen who have studied abroad will talk about their experiences abroad and talk to you all about why they decided to do it. Feel free to check out the study abroad website before the info session at http://studyabroad.yale.edu.

Tuesday 9/27 6-7:30pm Senior Mellon Kickoff Dinner (TD House)

Seniors please come to the TD house to learn about the Mellon Forum!  This is THE space to be in your senior year to share your original research and learn more about each other’s intellectual work.  We create a vibrant and supportive space full of good food and cheer.  All presenters receive mentoring from our wonderful Graduate Affiliates.

Tuesday 9/27 8-9pm Sophomore Advising Event (TD Dining Hall)

Come and meet our TD Graduate Affiliates who comprise a diverse range of graduate students in academic and professional fields from across the university. This is your opportunity to discuss with them courses of study or any future career questions.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Dean’s Domain

And this is a fascinating notion: that re-creating yourself this way, re-creating your entire life is a form of reinvention on par with the greatest works of literature.  This brings art into the realm of what ordinary people do to in order to survive.  It takes away the notion that art is too lofty for the masses, and puts it in the day-to-day.

-Edwidge Danticat

(Did you like that?  Do you want to talk literature with your dean?)
If so, consider signing up for one of the inaugural meetings of the TD reading group, where our first piece of the year will be a short story by Ms. Danticat.  There will be two meetings devoted to discussing her 2008 piece “Ghosts”:

Tuesday, September 27th, from noon-12:55pm (in consideration of those with 1:00 p.m. classes)

Wednesday, September 28th, from 6:30-7:30pm

Please email me to claim a place in the reading group; if there’s a landslide of interest, I’ll reserve spots a first-come, first-served basis.  (This will also tell me who gets all the way to my half of “Notes and News”…)
